For my first trip to Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago, I was booked in to the Bonham by my company. I'd never been to Edinburgh before and was only staying one night - but boy, was it worth it.

The Bonham used to be a student hall of residence, but there's nothing studenty about it now. Converted from those huge stone-fronted houses that seem to give Edinburgh such an imposing air, the Bonham welcomes you from the moment you walk through the wood and glass door. Situated close to Princes Street, it's perfect for shopping and sightseeing; Drumsheugh Gardens (where it's located) is a quiet street with little traffic and little noise - even on a Friday night!

The concierge was helpfulness personified; despite my many requests (where can I go on a sightseeing tour of the city; where do I get a taxi from; can I leave my case here until I get my flight), she never lost patience with me and was always ready and willing to help me out.

The rooms and suites at the Bonham are superb. There's no other way to describe them. I was lucky enough to get a suite (company traveller) and it was fab - huge 4-poster bed, beautiful marble bathroom with excellent power shower (I couldn't make myself get out of there the next morning) and a lovely sitting room with DVD player and internet access. Relaxing and calming, the comfy bed meant I had a great night's sleep and woke up feeling refreshed the next day.

As I was travelling by myself, I decided to eat in the hotel instead of going out and finding a restaurant. The Bonham's restaurant is a dignified place: dress up a little if you can, cos it does feel posh, but the food was lovely. If you eat there, order the rosemary creme brulee. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The waiting staff were attentive and, despite being a girl alone, I felt relaxed and comfy sat by myself. Breakfast the next day was just as good. Lovely scrambled eggs!

The Bonham is ex
pensive, but it's worth it. If you want a special treat, go there. It's lovely.
