      Hotel near York

On a recent visit to York, we chose to stay at Burn Hall, rather than right in the city centre. The hotel is situated 10 miles North of York, just off the A19 York/Thirst road. With the sat nav set, we found the hotel really easily because once off the main road and on the minor road signposted Huby, Burn Hall is situated half a mile along this road on the left. Although we hadn'trealised it was this easy to find, it did make it easier to get onto the main road and on our way the next day. For anyone not travelling by car,the nearest station is York. And Burn Hall is apparently about 20 minutes by taxi (7.4 miles).

      **First Impressions...**

There is a long drive into the hotel grounds (8 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland), and first impressions were good. The hotel has had a £4 million investment and whilst it is a large Victorian manor, there were no signs of flaking paintwork or neglect. We arrived late afternoon and it looked especially nice, as it was a lovely sunny day and when we drew up to the hotel, there were plenty of guests sitting at the tables on the large patio area. This we later found out was a great place to sit, as the big double doors led straight to the bar area.

There is an ample parking space available at the back of the hotel

The entrance lobby is large and bright with comfy chairs dotted around and display units selling various items of jewellery. After checking in we were given the key tour room; there are about 90 rooms in the hotel but it was all well sign posted and we found the room easily.

      **Bedroom and bathroom...**

The bedroom was more basic than the outside of the hotel suggested with a bed, wardrobe and table. This is what I would expect in a hotel room but the actual furniture was very basic looking. There are tea and coffee making facilities and a tv with free view television, but I almost felt as though I was in a hostel.

Similarly, the bathroom was very basic with the usual bath toilet and sink but with no fancy extras although there is a hairdryer!

That said, the bathroom and bedroom were spotlessly clean with really white bed lined and white fluffy towels.

Richardson's Restaurant: The restaurant is close to the side entrance and is a large room, with a range of dining options. Breakfast lunch (buffet style) and dinner are all served here, and having eaten the breakfast (full English) I can vouch for the fact that it is very tasty. Although the room is large with big windows, it is quite dark at night but the food is good.
Benson's Bar: We didn't eat here but we did buy some drinks in the evening. This is an altogether more modern area than the restaurant The bar serves a choice of drinks, including specialist ales and cocktails and also serves ight dishes.

The hotel was decent enough for an overnight stay and because of its location made it easy to access York. I found it more relaxing than staying in the city and it was certainly pleasant sitting in the grounds on a summer evening.

As mentioned the rooms are basic but the communal areas of the hotel are well tended and the furnishings of much better quality and style. The service is good and the food tasty and well presented. We paid about £60 bed and breakfast so I can't grumble. If you are looking for a decent hotel in pleasant surroundings and aren't too bothered about a fancy bedroom then I would recommend this.

      Thanks for reading

      Daniela xx
