      An award winning hotel

Here in Llandudno we have the hotel that was named the Best Bargain Hotel in the UK by travellers with TripAdvisor and it was the only British Hotel to get awards in two more categories. It came sixth in the Best Service in Europe category and eighth in the Hidden Gems in Europe category so I thought I'd better tell you about it.

The hotel in question is the Can-y-Bae, which translates as Song of the Bay and it is situated on the central promenade overlooking the sea. Having such a prominent position it means that once you are in Llandudno it is very easy to find - just head for the sea front and the Can-y-Bae is just a short walk from the theatre and conference centre Venue Cymru and it has been awarded 4 stars by the AA.

The Can y Bae is a Victorian Town House which has been fully refurbished offering 'relaxed elegance with a contemporary twist'.

As you enter the hotel you find yourself in the lounge with the reception area in front of you and the main part of the room round to your left. It is beautifully decorated and has comfortable chairs and sofas with small tables for your drinks and snacks.

The reception desk is smart, uncluttered and inviting and you will be assured of a warm welcome from the owners Dave and Michael. Check in is quick and efficient and you will be given all the information you need to know and offered help with your luggage.

The hotel has 16 bedrooms all of which are en suite with tea and coffee making facilities, colour TV, Hairdryer, trouser press, iron and ironing board and luxury toiletries. There are also four poster rooms for that special occasion! There is a wireless internet connection available throughout the hotel free of charge.

We walked up the stairs to our room, although there is also a lift available. The room was a double with a sea view and it was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was well appointed with a bath and a shower together with sink and toilet obviously! The toiletries - shampoo, shower gel, soap, and body lotion - were all lovely but for the life of me I can't remember what 'make' they were!

The room had a wardrobe with plenty of coat hangers, bed side tables with lamps and a direct dial telephone, a set of drawers and a chair. We had a lovely night's sleep as the bed was very comfortable and awoke the following morning looking forward to breakfast!

The restaurant is on the level below the main reception and again is beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The breakfast consisted of cereals, fruit, fruit juice a full Welsh breakfast (same as a full English but we were in Wales after all!), toast, tea or coffee. They do source ingredients from local suppliers where possible too.

The food and the service were excellent and we both thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and felt set up for the day ahead!

The evening meal was equally superb with excellent home cooking beautifully presented. The meal was three courses with a choice of three options at each course and tea or coffee to follow. The main course is always a choice of a meat dish, a fish dish or a vegetarian option. The hotel is fully licensed so you can have a drink with your meal if you would like to.

The menus for the evening meals are planned just a day or two in advance making use of whatever fresh, local produce is available at the time. You will be asked to give advance notice of what you will want to eat as all the food is cooked from scratch and they don't want to be left with cooked food that will not be eaten.

The hotel also provides morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon tea on request for an additional charge of course. Non residents are welcome and can enjoy an evening meal here too for £15 but you must book in advance.

The bar itself is situated on the ground floor of the hotel and is accessed by walking through the lounge into the small hall and then straight through into the bar area.

It is fairly small but has seating for about a dozen people and has pictures of stars of stage and screen all round the walls a few of whom have actually stayed at the hotel when appearing at the theatre.

The bar itself is well appointed so, although it isn't huge, you will certainly be able to find a drink to suit! There is even a Lifeboat collecting box on the bar for you to pop your small change into! LOL!

Sadly this hotel is not suitable for disabled customers as there are five steps up the front door and fourteen steps down to the dining room and there is no lift access down here.

So if you fancy visiting the hotel the tariff for bed and breakfast is as follows:

Standard Twin or Single rooms £33 per person per night
Premier Double or Twin rooms £38 per person per night
Premier Single Rooms £43 per person per night

Evening Meal is £15 per person per evening

There are reduced rates for children sharing with adults.

Well behaved dogs are welcome with 'equally well behaved owners' at £5 for the first night and £3 per night thereafter.

The full address of the hotel is:

So there you then, one of Llandudno's best hotels and a great base for exploring the surrounding area.
