Save yourself a lot of money and give it a miss. There are better places!

We attended Claridges hotel for an afternoon tea. One would think that it is the quintessential place to have afternoon tea but I am afraid that was not the case. We had booked up a few months ago to celebrate a dear friends 70th Birthday. We arrived by taxi and were met by the doorman who was deep in conversation with a colleague. He did not even acknowledge us as we went into the hotel or on the way out. Not a good start to the experience.

We were sat in the foyer where afternoon tea takes place. It is a quite a beautiful setting but they sat us in deep sofa and arm chairs which were actually quite uncomfortable and would have meant we would have had to come right to the edge of the seats just to talk to each other. We asked to be moved somewhere as it was clearly not suitable.

The selection of teas was quite superb and we started with Champagne which was beautiful. The sandwiches could not be faulted, the scones ok but the cakes were rather uninspiring and tasteless. They looked good but tasted of nothingness.

The ambiance was fairly ok but felt a little like a cafeteria in a train station. The art deco furnishings and decor was superb. The waitress was brilliant and very attentive.

For nearly £100 a head it was a complete and utter underwhelming experience.

There are better places to have a special afternoon tea and at half the price.

I could not and would not recommend Claridges for an afternoon tea bearing in mind it was for a celebration I am rather mortified it was such a poor experience.
