Advantages: Large rooms, four-poster beds, great food, lovely location

Disadvantages: Quite expensive but worth it

We stayed in this hotel for two nights between Christmas and New Year. It is located in the lovely town of Settle, North Yorkshire and is quite magnificent.

The hotel is located on the main road through Settle and is located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, so is back-dropped by mountains. It is the ideal place if you like hill walking or rambling. The town is an old fashioned market town, which you can easily walk around in half and hour. There is a railway line which features the famous Settle – Carlisle line and you can travel on this in a steam or electric train – the views are great.

The hotel itself is a very majestic building with a large car park. There are several types of room, we chose a four-poster room which was located in the annex next door to the main hotel building. Our room was very large, dominated by a beautiful four-poster bed with lovely drapes. It had several windows which not only let in lots of light, but afforded views of the lovely surroundings. We also had a sofa, chairs, fireplace, TV etc. The en-suite was also very large and clean.

On the first night we ate in the Ingfield Room – the main dining room. The meals are all beautifully cooked and laid out and if there is something special you fancy – just ask and they try to provide. The second night we ordered room service and chose lasagne – this was huge and cooked to perfection and came with salad and chips and flowers, even though we hadn’t actually asked for them – a nice touch.

The hotel has a bar area, which is very informal and cosy and at the time we went was decked out in decorations. There is a huge log fireplace here too.

The staff here are very helpful and friendly and can offer advice on where to visit and what to do nearby. You can stay on a B&B basis or op for evening meal too. We personally thought the room service meals were bigger and better that the restaurant, so would recommend t
hem, but it is obviously down to individual taste. We prefer simpler food.

Anyone thinking of visiting the Dales, could do much worse than visit this hotel.
