~ About The Guy Fawkes Inn, York ~

This inn is named after the notorious plotter himself Guy Fawkes who was born here. You certainly step back in time as you enter this dark and mysterious Inn. The inn is still lit by gas lights. Although the Inn is dark inside it is full of character and charm with wooden floorboards and stairs. The wooden stairs are creaky and a bit uneven but it all adds to the atmosphere of the place. There are twelve bedrooms some of the rooms are in the Guy Fawkes cottage at the back of the inn.

~ Location ~

We choose this Inn because of it's location right next to York Minster.

~ Reception/Check in ~

This is at the bar as you go in to the Inn, it is computerised and reception staff are very friendly and helpful.
After giving in your details you are given a key card for your room.

~ Parking ~

This is the only problem we could find because the Inn has such a good location the car park is round the corner about eight minutes away. But this wasn't really a big problem because the staff were great they took our case/bag to our room's for us whilst we parked up.

Free parking permits are given to guests staying here and must be requested when booking.

~ Our Rooms ~

We stayed for four nights Monday to Friday in The Belfry Suite which is right at the top of the Inn and consists of a double bedroom, study, lounge and bathroom with a jacuzzi bath. The rooms are well set out and very clean.

Our rooms were full of character with olde world furnishings and oak beams. A chaise lounge in the study, a games table, two two seater settee's and a large flatscreen television in the lounge. Be careful though some of the beams were low and I cracked my head on them a couple of times ouch.

The bathroom was modern though with a jacuzzi bath which was lovely after a day walking around one of my favourite cities. Lots of large white fluffy towels where provided along with L'ocitane toiletries (bath foam, bath fizzers and soap) these were changed/replenished everyday.

In the study there was a kettle and a good supply of various teas, coffees, chocolate, fruity teas, milk, sugar and biscuits which were also replenished daily.

There was a very high standard of cleanliness and rooms where cleaned daily.

The views from the windows are fantastic and in the lounge and bathroom you can see the minster up really close, so close you feel like you can touch it. The study and bedroom windows look out over York City. In the mornings and early evening you can hear York Minsters bell's which I thought was lovely although I realise some people would not appreciate this.

~ Breakfast ~

Breakfast is served in the bar and is very well laid out. You help yourself to a choice of cereals (All bran, Muesli, Weetabix, Cornflakes) and juices (orange, grapefruit and apple). When you have picked your table and sat down you choose from a menu what you would like for your main breakfast you can choose from:

Haddock with poached and lemon butter.

Yorkshire breakfast which is pork sausage, black pudding, wild mushrooms, back bacon, eggs (poached, fried or scrambled) Tomatoe and beans.

Salmon with lemon and black pepper.
Porridge

Bacon sandwich

You also get toast white or brown and tea or a cafeterie of coffee.

I tried all of the breakfasts except the salmon. The haddock was lovely moist with a lovely flaky texture it was delicious and the poached egg and lemon butter really addded to the taste. This was my favourite breakfast.

The Yorkshire breakfast was also really good and I liked the wild mushrooms.

The porridge was of the thick homemade variety and came in a very large bowl.

The bacon sandwich was also good and made with nice thick back bacon.

I also had fresh juice and toast and a pot of tea each day.

~ Dinner ~

Dinner is available Monday to Thursday from 5.30pm-9.00pm. Simple snacks are served Friday and saturday evenings ( we did not try the dinner menu because we have lots of favourite restaurants in York we did try The Fish Co though) but if you require something a bit more substantial the staff are happy to make a reservation at any of their other fine restaurants which are:

Harvilles Restaurant

Serves pure Aberdeen Angus and English Longham beef steaks in deco surroundings.

The Chop Room at Marmadukes

This award winning restaurant specialises in fine yorkshire cooking using only fresh, local ingredients. Holy island oysters, Nidderdale lamb cutlets, Whitby lobster and prime beef. And lots and lots of puddings!
The Coctail Lounge

On the top deck of Harvilles You'll discover what a mixologist is all about.

The fish Co.

One of the best fish restaurants in York with a fresh fish counter and a saltwater tank with live lobster and crab. They serve lovely fish and chips too.
We both tried the Haddock and chips here which were the nicest I have ever had. The fish was succulent, flaky and you could tell it was really fresh. We weren't very adventourous I know but I have never tried lobster or crab and wasn't brave enough to this time.

Lamb and Lion Inn

Good simple food with the best beer garden in the city and a great view of the Minster.

We called here for a glass of wine and will visit again to eat and yes the beer garden is lovely, you can see it when you are walking round the walls and it really does have super views.

~ Guy Fawkes Inn Rates ~

Prices are per room per night and although they are expensive I think its well worth it. It is worth having a look online to see if you can get rooms cheaper:

www.laterooms.com

Sun-Thurs ** Fri-Sat

Belfry Suite £200 ** £250
Four poster £130 ** £175
Deluxe Double £110** £150
Petite Double £90** £120

Whilst the rooms where being cleaned I did have a peek at some of the other rooms and they all looked lovely and very clean.

~ My Opinion Overall~

I really enjoyed our stay and will be staying here again in the future. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and I dont think you could find a better location in York than this. The rooms and cleanlinesss were maintained to a very high standard and breakfast was substantial and delicious. I have given the Guy Fawkes Inn five stars and am already planning another visit.

Thank you for reading my review which is also on Ciao with photographs :o).
