Hampton By Hilton - Newport East
I booked this hotel as it was pretty reasonable and convenient for the places we wanted to visit. I booked a second Hilton using loyalty point but as this one was cheaper and I only had enough for one night I chose to pay for this and have the more expensive one as my freebie. If this had been closer to Cardiff I might have booked both nights in the same hotel but it was a bit further away for one night here and one night in the Hilton closer to Cardiff on the second night.
This is a pretty new hotel and it is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It ha a large empty office building which is also new next to it so I am assuming they plan on building more around the hotel. For now there is any amount of free parking as the few other building around are either empty or have minimal occupant.
The building is brand new and the reception area just inside the main entrance. On either side there are plenty of places where you can sit on sofas and chat to other guests or have a drink and something to eat at the bar.
We were welcomed and asked if we would like to put a credit card on the room in case we wanted to add drinks or food to our room bill. We did, then completed a form with car registration and signed then shown where the lift was and given our key cards.
The lift took us to the third floor and then we jut had to walk along a very new, nicely and fairly neutral coloured carpeted hall to our room.
This had a double bed and a sofa bed made up into a double. I personally would have preferred it to be left as a sofa as it took up a lot of room but as we were only there one night I couldn't be bothered to ask them to fold it up.
The entry was tiled and on the left as you came in was the shower room, no bath jut a walk in shower and toilet. The basin was on a minimalist stand. The toiletries were in large dispensers on the shower wall and included shower gel, shampoo. Conditioner while beside the basin we had hand wash and moisturizer. A narrow unit held glasses, extra towels, a box of tissues and a pedal bin underneath.
The frosted glass door to this shower room was a sliding door which when it was closed to the bathroom , the wardrobe was open. The same door slid across from one to the other. The entire wardrobe was in this same frosted glass look and held a handing rail with hanger, an ironing board and iron and the hair dryer in a black bag.
There was no safe in the room and apart from the wardrobe there was very little storage. A small bedside table either side of the bed had a shelf under each but certainly this hotel is aiming at the business traveler or those, like us spending just one night.
The carpet was a kind of scallop pattern in dark pink which was picked up in the headboard of the bed again and also a large cushion on a square pouffe seat as well. The beds were made up with nice, white cotton sheets but other than the pink headboard and cushion there was no other colour in the room. Except for the photo montage of local ivons which were black and white with one aspect highlighted in pink.
I was happy with the reading lights on either side of the bed as I do like to read in bed and like a good bright individually controlled light. The TV was a large flat screen on a narrow shelf below which was the kettle with tea and coffee making stuff. Beside this and where the sofa bed was set up was a rounded front shelf which was the desk. There were plenty of sockets here and beside the TV and there was an internet connection. I plugged it in and it said I was connected but I still could not get on the internet and there was no wifi that my laptop could find at all in the area.
The hotel had a small gym or fitness room and a limited bar menu but as we had been in the car all day we decided that it looked fine to us and it meant we could both enjoy a drink too.
The food was fine. We had a pizza and nachos to share and were both very full. There was plenty of cheese on the nachos and they were served with salsa sour cream and guacamole in small pots. The pizza had a stuffed crust, was light and had plenty of topping. We had a white wine and a beer and it came to under £20 so we were very satisfied; it may not have been the healthiest choice but it was tasty, filling and saved us driving out again.
Breakfast was a buffet a bit like the US style but with proper cutlery and crockery. There were islands offering different things such as juices, fruit and cereal but the fruit was slices of grapefruit or oranges or whole apples. Cereals offered a variety of the little boxes or a sort of fruit and fibre/muesli. There was no yoghurt, Toast with various toppings and full hot breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausages and such like. Under each island of food was the necessary cutlery and crockery.
Had I known how crummy the next Hilton was going to be I would have booked two nights here and this was the cheaper of the two hotels!!
