A lovely B & B on the outskirts of Oxford.

During last year's bank holiday weekend we had plans to meet a group of friends and go to Oxford for an event. Another friend who had visited recently recommended this B & B to us, so we decided to book it. Heather House is run by the lovely Viv, and is situated on Iffley Road which comes out of central Oxford. To walk to the edge of town (Magdalen Bridge) took 10-15 minutes, and a further 10 minutes walk meant you were at Carfax Tower in the heart of the town. Nearby Cowley Road has shops and places to eat and is only 5-7 minutes walk.

I booked over the telephone, about a month before, and took the last room. It was a family room, but as there was only two of us, she charged us only £90 per night including breakfast, which seemed reasonable enough, as we have paid practically that sort of money for pokey rooms in less maintained B & Bs. Smaller rooms would have been cheaper of course. All rooms were en suite apart from the single room which had a private bathroom. There are a few steps to go in, but if you think the stairs could be a problem, then they do have rooms downstairs.

We arrived about lunchtime and pressed the buzzer. Viv greeted us and showed us around, giving us a key and showing us to our room. The room had a double and a single bed and an en suite bathroom which had a shower, basin and lavatory. The room décor was discreet, a floral duvet cover with light coloured walls and furnishings. There was also a flat screen TV with remote control (we never watched anything) and a radio alarm clock. There is are tea and coffee making facilities and a hair-dryer also, plus plenty of convenient plug sockets, and a full length mirror inside the door of the bathroom. I am pleased to note that the room was also very clean. We slept well, our room was at the back, but although close to a busy road it is a residential area, so I don't imagine you will hear much disturbance if you at the front. The bed was comfy and the shower was hot (although I did need to wait a bit for the hot water to come through in the morning).

Outside the room there was a computer, apparently with SKYPE, for those who wanted to use it, and you could use their wi-fi for free. My friend got connected on his phone straight away. Downstairs was the communal lounge with comfy chairs and lots of books and maps.

At the back of the house, downstairs, was the dining room. We booked a time for breakfast the morning before and put in our orders. Clean and modern, furnished in pale wood and with colourful prints on the walls, there is fruit juice and cereals ready for you to serve yourself. Toast is made to order (white or brown) and was done to perfection - good sized pieces of bread, lightly toasted, so hot and crunchy but with no burnt bits! There is a dish full of individually wrapped patties of butter or Flora in front of you, so there was no danger of running out and having to request more. Also there is another dish full of individual jams and marmalades. On the side (with the cereals) are Marmite, Vegemite and honey. If you wish you can have a fresh fruit salad with yoghurt or a cooked breakfast. We both went for the cooked breakfast. My boyfriend had sausage and bacon with scrambled eggs, baked beans, tomato and mushrooms. He didn't like the scrambled eggs and passed on them the next day. To be honest the plate of food was massive so that he didn't feel that he needed it. I just had two fried eggs, mushrooms and beans and it was a large plateful again and I felt very satisfied as I rolled out. Certainly we didn't need a lunch until a bit later!

Check out is 10.30am, but you can leave luggage with them if you prefer. There are a few parking spots at the front of the hotel (we requested one on booking), or else you can park on the street. Cards are taken for payment buy there is a 5% charge, which I think is a bit steep.

I would definitely recommend this B & B if you are coming to Oxford, I thought it one of the nicest B & Bs I have stayed in over recent years, and if you don't mind the short walk into the town, then this will serve you well
