My girlfriend and I have stayed at many Bed and Breakfast establishments and always try to book one that's not too expensive, but has good food and facilities. Well, with a recent visit to South Devon, we struck gold. An internet search revealed Higher Beeson House to be something different. Located in the lovely village of Beeson in the South Hams district of Devon, Higher Beeson House is set in a converted stable block on a working organic farm. The polished internet site (www.higherbeeson.co.uk) made the place look extremely attractive. Pictures of the rooms and gardens are displayed and zoomed, catching the viewer's attention. The location and accommodation appeared perfect, so we booked for a three night stay. The website has comprehensive directions for getting to Higher Beeson House, explaining exactly how to get there. Stupidly, I decided to forgo these and rely on the postcode inputted into my sat nav. We got to Beeson, but then had to ask for directions, to get the final few hundred yards. The final approach to Higher Beeson house is up a very steep lane (the car's clutch was complaining going up, it was that steep). A sharp left turn into the forecourt and we were there. At this point, we realised that the website does not do the place justice. The accommodation block is separate from the farmhouse, just across a courtyard, so very private. The farm has a huge garden, lovingly cared for, with carefully laid paths and a massive pond. Strange poultry (we later discovered these were Muscovy ducks) were wandering around the place; fortunately, these goose sized birds were quite tame. We parked the car and went to meet Linda, our host. Linda showed us to our room and explained that, as guests, we had full use of the garden. We were pleased with this as we'd seen how lovely it was and were looking forward to having a drink, sitting at the table on the terrace overlooking the pond in the evening. We had booked the double/family en suite room which has a 'super-king-size' bed (I've never seen a bed as big as this) as well as a bunk bed for kids. The room was huge, and the massive bed looked small by comparison. The furniture was of a high quality and carefully maintained. The décor was very light, airy, and pleasant, giving the room a very friendly feel. One of the windows looked out over the garden and the South Hams countryside beyond, lovely view! The bathroom was another plus point for this B&B. Complimenting the room; it was very large, with a massive, old fashioned bath and ornate taps. As expected, it was scrupulously clean. A Hairdryer, a safe, TV and coffee/tea making equipment completed the room's facilities. We knew we'd chosen well. There is even a shared fridge for the three guest rooms. We booked a breakfast time with Linda and enjoyed a fantastic night's sleep in the quiet Devon countryside. Breakfast was in the owner's house, in an authentic farmhouse dining room. The choice of food was far more extensive than my morning appetite could manage, but consisted of cereal, fruit, and a huge cooked breakfast. Eschewing the healthy options, I plumped for the 'fry up', although my girlfriend opted for fruit as well and pronounced it delicious. The food, cooked on the farmhouse Aga, was perfectly prepared. Local produce is used, and Linda knows exactly how to prepare it. After the gorgeous sausage, bacon, eggs, and trimmings, I was completely full, satisfied, and looking forward to my day (in my opinion, this is exactly how a B&B meal should make a visitor feel!). Linda gave us advice on where to go during our stay and even gave us a recommendation for our evening meal. On spotting our bird watching binoculars, she took time to explain what had been seen recently and, to our amazement, told us that a very rare bird, the cirl bunting, breeds in their garden! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Devon and the facilities at Higher Beeson House were one of the highlights of our holiday. We spent time in the garden (afternoon tea, served on the terrace, can be arranged), enjoying the sunshine, the flowers, and a well earned drink. A lovely place to spend some time in the evening. The owners clearly take a huge amount of pride in their accommodation and service and I could not find anything at all that wasn't to my liking (once I'd found the place!). On the website, this is described as a 'Luxury Bed and Breakfast' and I concur. It is not cheap, however. We paid £39 per night per person, for our three night stay. We did feel that staying at Higher Beeson House was worth paying this much. Anyone who wants to stay at a luxury B&B in this area should definitely look at Higher Beeson House.
