Well known Widnes landmark needs some TLV

Once upon a time, this hotel used to be the jewel in Widnes' (admittedly slightly rusty) crown. Located in the 'Higher' Widnes (Where the posher people live) , the Hillcrest sat on the edge of a large estate, a prime location for businessman and partygoers alike.

Its location sits between the small area of Cronton, which has 2 of its own well regarded pubs, and Farnworth, which used to be home to The Black Horse - Which is now in turn a posh restaurant. The closing down of the Black Horse should have strengthened the position of the Hillcrest - but it seems to have done the opposite - The place is now pretty quiet even of a weekend, it mainly seems to be a party venue for christmas and easter holidays now.

Inside, the decor is a little dated but not too bad - I've never had the pleasure of spending the night here (after all, it is a hotel as well as a bar) but reviews have been mixed.

If you ever find yourself in Widnes, the Hillcrest is probably one of the best places to stay the night ( as well as the Everglades Hotel) - But if you just fancy a couple of drinks, i'd recommend a trip to the Unicorn in Cronton instead.
