The travel writer Bill Bryson has a lovely turn of phrase, and described corporate hotels as being "like offices with beds in; comfortable, yet cold." With the Hilton brand, I expected this to be the case when I attended a wedding there recently. In case you don't know Croydon, it is a vast, ugly, concrete mess with no discernable character to it at all. I can say that because I used to live there. The Corydon Hilton is right in the middle of a large industrial area, about 2 miles from the nearest station (Waddon). I have to admit, my expectations of the place weren't too high.Aside from the train station, it has a large car park and is very convenient. The reception area however began to change my opinion. It is very light and designed with almost an open-plan approach. There is a mezzanine floor for drinks, and everything is subtly done. The decor is a little varied, jumping across different styles, but it somehow works. The food was fantastic, although very dear indeed. The service and presentation of it was also excellent and highly professional. You should never feel like the waiter is doing you a favour, and this didn't occur here. The room itself was exceptionally large, and very comfortable. Whilst Bryson's description was accurate, the room was functional, clean and very conveniently placed. The only curious thing was the size of the windows, offering a lovely view of, er, Croydon. The price of the room is negotiable. We had originally booked on the internet for £70 for a double. Talking to friends, we realised that a deal was occurring that weekend (and probably every one), where the same room could be booked for £59 - something the website omitted to tell us. We cancelled and rebooked - no problem. Apart from the expensive food (£5 for a sandwich, £3.20 for a beer), I really enjoyed my short stay at what my Mum would describe as "a proper hotel."
