Advantages: Great health club
Disadvantages: Poorly maintained rooms and weak management (on the day we were there)
Since I was young, the Hilton name has held a mystique that oozed class and quality. If you had told me then that, when I was older, I would be able to stay at the Hilton anywhere, you would have convinced me that I was some kind of high flying successful businessman. Not so, the Hilton is now within reach of your average (including myself) person.
Therefore, whilst attending and engagement party in Sheffield, we booked into the Hilton (using our Tesco vouchers - regular readers of my reviews will be spotting a Tesco voucher theme here). The hotel is based in a canal basin area and is nice enough from the outside. Once inside, the lobby is attractive and very comfortable and the staff were courteous as they assigned our room. That was where the good news ended for the time being though as the room was incredibly basic, not at all what we had expected from the classy name that the Hilton has. The bathroom was the worst with grubby floors and cracked tiles.
Now, I am not a complainer by nature and indeed, I like to compliment good service when received so we accepted that maybe we had set our standards too high and went to visit the health club. Now this, I must say, was very nice with a good sized pool and a very well equipped and spacious gymnasium.
Once rested and with party over, we returned to our room for a good nights sleep away from our young children. At about two in the morning, the noise fromt he room next door became unbearable. We phoned the reception desk repeatedly to ask for assistance and none came, in fact all that came to the room was more and more drinks from room service. At 5:30 am I gave up and went down to find the manager. Nice as he was, he offered little in the way of a solution and we were left with a further tarnished view of the place and the hotel chain in general.
This hotel is great if you want a good health club and you do not have high expectations as befits the Hilton's name. But, don't say I did not warn you when I tell you that there are better value places in Sheffield that offer just as much.
Summary: Would certainly shop around next time
