Holiday Inn, Basingstoke
We spent one night in this Holiday Inn hotel as part of our coach trip to Wisley Gardens and Hampton Court Flower Show. As my husband said we might almost have driven back to Derby as Basingstoke is hardly just around the corner from Hampton Court but that was the hotel they put us in so needless to say we can quite a long journey in our coach.
The hotel was very 'on the ball' when we arrived an hour or two later that originally planned. They had our keys all in enveloped with our names on them and we just queued up, found or room key card and then headed for the rooms. The young lady was very pleasant but it was not like a normal check in where you had to complete forms and are welcomed individually.
The Reception area was large but sort of divided up into different areas/ the actual Reception desk had a largish space around it but to the left were chairs to sit and meet and chat and even enjoy a drink from the bar which was nearby. A large seating area was over to the right as you entered the hotel which offered a light open area for meeting, reading or socialising. The carpet was rather 'in your face', burgundy with sort of blobs of paler color.
Just off this area was a door out to a garden seating area which was grassed and had a hard area too. This was also adjacent to the car park for guests so not the greatest view but did allow you to enjoy the sunshine if you wanted to. There were BBQ grills for guest use too if you fancied a BBQ.
This was pretty much a standard Holiday Inn room with a double bed, four pillows with choice of firm or soft. The bed was made up with white cotton sheets with a navy throw at the end.. Behind the bed the entire wall was wooden panelled which could have made it quite dark but it was not too bad at all. All the usual things were in the room from the flat screen TV, the kettle with tea/coffee and obviously hanging area, iron and board and drawer space. The reading lamps were a bit inadequate for reading at night I found but having spent the day in an uncomfortable, non air conditioned coach I was not up for reading too long anyway.
It wasn't a large room but adequate for a night and quite nice and light too with a large window, not a great view but it did offer the light. The desk had electrical outlet and you could borrow adapters and converters should you need them. Wifi was available and free to Elite IHG reward club members but cost so I didn't bother. Another bonus was that the double glazing did make the room quite. You could open the window or use the air conditioner which is what we did as it was quite hot that night.
The bathroom was pretty small but there was a bath with a shower over it so I was happy. There was plenty of hot water and mini bottles of toiletries and after the awful day we had endured I was so looking forward to lying and relaxing in my bath. I had even take a Lush bath bomb to enjoy.
This was included in our trip so we made our way to the dining room pretty much as soon as we had washed and changed because the coach was so late. The meal was a buffet affair with a choice of salads to start with which were fresh if a bit unimaginative.
The main meal was a choice of lasagne or salmon with some rather well cooked vegetables. The salmon was actually very nice but the cauliflower etc was rather over cooked for my preference.
The deserts were varied and you could choose from a couple of mouse/jelly options, a trifle and a couple of others. They were once again nothing that memorable but perfectly okay. The entire meal was in the same class of adequate and functional in my view.
This was in the same dining room which was a nice light open room. The staff were very pleasant both in the evening and the morning. The breakfast was quite limited in my view. There was fresh fruit, bananas and apples. I couldn't find any cut up fresh or tinned fruit at all. I did find a sort of muesli and yoghurt. The other went for the cooked stuff which was a selection of scrambled eggs, bacon, potato cakes and beans etc. They all seemed quite happy with their cooked food but I wish there had been more option for me. They did have toast, pastries and muffins but I have to say I was not that tempted by any other offerings.
While staying at the hotel The Aquadrome Swimming Complex nearby is free for guests to use during your stay you just need to ask at reception for the free pass.
Yes I would say that it was a well run efficient and pleasant hotel. They allowed me to use my reward card even though we had booked in with a group booking which many hotels don't. I was impressed with the way the hotel checked us all in so quickly and they catered adequately for the large group with food. Breakfast could have been better for me but I took an apple to eat later.
