Advantages: Reasonable cost, good breakfast, ideal if travelling with family.
Disadvantages: Own transport essential, rooms quite small, would be very hot in mid Summer.
I stayed in this hotel at the very beginning of July 2000.
I was travelling with my young children and my priorities were value for money and finding a hotel where I didn't spend every waking moment trying to stop the children having fun, for fear we would upset other guests!
The Holiday Inn Express hotel at Cardiff Bay is a very modern 4 story building, right in the middle of a huge regeneration area, consequently there is a lot of building work and road works going on...none of which affected our stay at the hotel...it wasn't like staying on a building site but if you stay here, don't expect to find yourself in an old established area...at least not for another few years!
The room was very clean, with enough room for a double bed (comfortable) and bed settee (not comfortable for an adult but fine for my 2 lightweight children). The bed settee was already made up, which I appreciated, in other hotels I have had to do this myself and when you arrive somewhere after a long drive, wrestling a duvet into a case isn't very high on my list of Fun Things To Do! Only 4 pillows were provided for 4 people (and the thinnest pillows imaginable too) and when I asked for 2 more pillows, the staff were polite but dubious that such things could be found and very pleased with themselves when 1 extra pillow was produced!!
There was a small space for hanging clothes, but no drawers (I imagine most people stay for just one night and don't bother to unpack).
The bathroom was bright, clean and fully tiled. There was a power shower but no bath. Plenty of towels were provided when we arrived but on the second day, although the room was cleaned and the beds made, they forgot to give us any towels at all and I had to ask for them. The provision of Dove Hand Wash and Lux Shower Gel was an improvement over the expected tiny slivers of hotel soap.
There was the usual small kettle, but only 2 mugs and no extra tea/coff
ee/milk, even though our room was clearly booked in advance and made-up for 4 people.
There was a hairdryer, and remote control teletext tv.
There was a small bar and lounge on the ground floor, overlooking the water. Also vending machines, a free ice machine (ice bucket in the room) and an extremely good selection of tourist literature.
Take-away meals could be ordered from reception (Chinese/Indian/Pizza) at reasonable prices and delivered to the hotel for you to eat in your room or in the small dining area.
A "complimentary" breakfast is provided each morning (do check at what time though, because I found 3 different times written down in various places in the hotel, for the same day)!! The dining area was too small for the size of hotel, and one morning we were asked if we'd move on quickly when we'd finished so other people could be seated...NOT the relaxing start to the day that you might like! The breakfast itself was good though, a selection of juices, teas, coffees, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts, croissants, fresh toast - I thought this added very considerably to the "value-for-money" that I was looking for.
The lift broke down on Saturday and wasn't fixed by Sunday, and as the hotel was completely full, this lead to lots of hot and bothered adults and children, clambering up and down stairs - not the hotels fault of course, but there were no offers of help from staff, not that I saw anyway.
The cost was £49.00 for a family room, per night to include "complimentary" breakfast.
If you need a reasonable hotel at modest cost, this one is definitely worth trying, my family enjoyed our stay, despite the minor irritations and would certainly try other hotels in the chain.
