Holiday Inn Hotel (Glasgow)
Date: 04/09/11
Rating:
Advantages: good location, good restaurant
Disadvantages: small bed, small room, rude receptionist
The holiday inn, theatreland is part of the Intercontinental Hotel Group and one of the global chains of holiday inn hotels.
The Location:
This hotel is situated within a short walk of central station, queen street station and buchanan bus station. It is opposite the Cineworld cinema and close to shops, bars and restaurants. The hotel is easy to find and although does not have its own parking, it is across from a multi-story car park. The car park is quite expensive and on an overnight stay I have paid £25 for parking there.
Check in:
From the outside the building looks quite striking, there is a turret at the top...I'm still intrigued to know if there is a room up there! On entering the hotel the lobby is quite dark but elegantly decorated. I found the member of reception staff I was speaking to quite abrupt and unhelpful. He quickly ran through the basics like how to get to my room, what time breakfast was at etc. When I had further questions he seem disinterested and abrupt.
The room:
The room was small and basic, with a very small double bed. The bathroom was also quite small with a shower over the bath and shallow bath tub. The room was overall average. It contained most amenities to be expected from a hotel room: phone with room service, hair dryer, tea and coffee making facilities, t.v. and ironing board with iron.
The restaurant:
The restaurant - La Bonne Auberge - was the best part of this hotel. La Bonne Auberge has a mix of Scottish and continental influences on the menu. I started with wood pigeon which was delicious and rich tasting. I followed with a rib eye steak which was a very generous portion and perfectly cooked. The wine list was a decent size with a range of lower end to top end wine and champagne. The staff in the restaurant provided 5 star service, were well presented and chatted with us. The decor of the restaurant was cosy and elegant with crisp white tablecloths and attractive crockery, all with the logo 'La Bonne Auberge' across them.
Overall, the hotel is average but I would definitely visit the restaurant for dinner again.
Summary: Hotel average, restaurant excellent
