Advantages: Price, cleanliness

Disadvantages: Just a small gripe with one staff member's custermer service

Just back from an over-night away, hence the purge of travel related reviews. We stayed in Holiday Inn, Basingstoke. It is very central and only a few minutes' drive from the Festival Place (where we ate and watched a movie). Two miles away is the leisure park - we were given complimentary tickets to use the Aquadrome included in our room purchase.

This is definitely one to book online as the walk in prices are published at reception as £150+. We got ours from late rooms for £55.00 - double room, en-suite with bath/shower, one arm chair and table, writing desk and chair, TV, coffee/tea making facilities, ample sockets, wardrobe. Breakfast was not included and retailing at around £13.00 per person we opted to make our own arrangements.

The staff were friendly and efficient when checking us in. Also very helpful in fulfilling the website's promise of free passes to the Aquadrome in lieu of onsite leisure facilities. The only gripe is that in the bathroom there is a promise of complimentary hygiene items if you have forgotten them. When we returned from the cinema I enquired about a sanitary item. A lady dressed in managers clothes who seemed to have English as a second language 'dealt' with my, let's face it, embarrassing request. I was told to maybe try the ladies bathroom (she didn't know what coinage was required), or failing that there is a garage next door. Thankfully I have a wonderful partner who popped and got some for me.

The room was clean and we got a good night sleep. Check out was straight forward - we didn't charge anything to the room and this was acknowledged as we closed the transaction.

We often have reason to book into a cheap hotel for one or two nights and on this experience I would be happy to use them or another of the chain again.

Summary: Fine for a place to lay your head.

Holiday Inn Express is even better value. The hotels are really modern and breakfast is included in price which is cheaper than holiday inn itself. Booking online via their website will get you a cheaper price too :)
