Advantages: Best located hotel in the downtown area, close to lots of attractions.
Disadvantages: The restaurant is expensive and not good for kids.
As a frequent visitor to Milton Keynes I have stayed in several hotels in the area, most of them within the proximity of the MK Centre Shopping Mall: The Travellodge, The Ramada and Jurys Inn for example but also some further outside of this circle such as The Quality Hotel.
The central Holiday Inn at Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire is located at 500 Saxons Gate West and is the hotel where I stay most frequently when I visit the city. It is not the cheapest of those I have just mentioned, infact it is one of the most expensive. Depending on how far in advance you manage to secure a reservation the prices can vary from around £70 per room per night up to around £200 for a basic twin room. I tend to pay around the lower end of that spectrum, usually needing to book up to six months in advance. The hotel only allows 2 people per room so anymore than that will need to book another room. I usually travel in a group and the hotel does their best to situate you on the same floor as your party but are not always able to do this.
The reason I favour this hotel above the cheaper alternatives is it's superb location. If travelling by train the hotel is within walking distance along Midsummer Boulevard. It is located at the edge of a main road opposite the entrance to the fabulous shopping mall 'The MK Centre'. It is also within walking distance (5-10 mins away) of the brilliant Xscape centre, a place where you can ski, bowl or shop, dine and climb amongst other things. The theatre distict and a cluster of pubs and bars are also very near the hotel. As for navigating the road, this is not a problem as there are wide underpasses just near the carpark. The MK Dons Stadium is also nearby. As mentioned earlier, the hotel is also close to the main train station.
The hotel has 166 bedrooms which are decorated in a plain, white fashion. I have always found the bed-linen and carpets very clean and crisp. The rooms have en-suite bathrooms, televsisions and tea making facilities.
The reception staff are mostly competent although on my last trip here they managed to charge me twice by mixing up my name with another customer. I wrangled with one staff member for a half hour before I was 'allowed' to leave the hotel after proving I'd paid on another bill! Check in time is 2 pm and check out time is 12pm. There is usually a queue at reception.
If you are a fequent visitor to any Holiday Inn Hotel you can sign up to be a member of the Priority Club which means the hotel keeps a record of your stay and can ease you through the checking in process much quicker. You also earn reward points for frequent stays.
The hotel has access to a swimming pool and sauna and there are conference rooms for business guests. I do find that there are usually a lot of business people staying here.
There is an expensive bar and restaurant on the ground floor which is not really a great atmosphere for kids - it is rather posh and stuffy although I can not fault the food or the service. Room service is also available and is served in a timely fashion.
To book the Holiday Inn Central directly go to this website:
There is also a Holiday Inn Express nearby so make sure you double check the address is 500 Saxon Gate.
You can check out the local attractions at this website too:
It is a hotel I definately recommend and I would award five stars for location, four stars for customer service and the standard of room.
Summary: A good hotel in a great, central location,
