We stayed at this hotel last week as we booked a trip to a nearby theme park - Paultons Park and were pleasently suprised. Myself, Hubby and daughter who is 5 stayed in a family room and booked via the internet. The check in was quick and easy and the staff were all smiling and even talked to our little one. Clean shower, comfortable bed and tea and coffee - quick, simple and easy. We didnt want to pay too much as it was part of a bigger break in Southampton - it worked out less than £100 for the room. We were not expecting a lot as we new it was an express hotel, but for us more comfortable than Travel Lodges.
Destination: Holiday Inn, Eastleigh-Southampton Duration: December 17th 2005 A friend of mine had decided to hold her Wedding reception at Marwell Hall, Marwell Zoological Park, and had invited my partner and me along. As Marwell is approximately an hour away from where we live, we decided, along with another couple, to find a hotel near the park where we could stay. A quick check on the Internet resulted in the booking of two rooms at the Holiday Inn, Southampton-Eastleigh, for an early booking price of GBP 50 per room. The hotel is based just of J13 of the M3, and approximately 10 minutes by car from Marwell Park. Our initial impressions of the hotel, on arrival on Saturday lunchtime were very favourable. The hotel itself had been easy to find, and provided a large number of parking facilities. The reception foyer appeared to have been recently renovated, and provided a large seating area within its Lounge Bar. The receptionists were very friendly, and provided an easy check in. From there, we went to take a look at the rooms we had been allocated before going for a drink in the bar so quickly hopped into the lifts adjacent to reception. My friends had booked a non-smoking room and us a smoking room, so we were slightly surprised to find we were located along the same floor, albeit a fair distance apart with a generous landing area in between the two sections. The rooms themselves were of a generous size, consisting of a large double bed, desk area, seating area, and a TV with a Playstation. The bathrooms were of a modest size and stocked with additional bathroom products for us to use. Our biggest delight however, came with the Pillow Menu! Although each room is stocked with standard pillows, there is a choice of 4 other types (including those with allergies) which can be requested from reception. The rooms also came with black out curtains, a very good idea when the sun is streaming into the room and 8am, and you're trying to sleep of a hangover! The rooms are also air-conditioned, with a temperature control available allowing the guest to select their preferred room temperature. After the rooms had been given the once over we went down to the Lounge Bar, situated to the front of reception. Now, although in my experience hotel drinks prices are high, we were quite surprised that a round of 4 drinks cost almost GBP 20! The food menu was also very expensive, with sandwiches costing around GBP 6 each. Not to be deterred we decided to go to the local pub opposite the hotel and managed to spend several hours playing pool, and enjoying drinks prices of round GBP 10 for 4 drinks. Despite the prices in the lounge bar, the atmosphere was very pleasant, and plenty of comfy chairs were provided for guest's leisure. Behind the Lounge Bar are the toilets and I had to comment because the quality and cleanliness of the area was exceptional. The toilets were maintained on a regular basis, and were kept to a very high standard. Also offered by the Holiday Inn are: A new Academy offering Conference and Training suites for business wishing to make use of the facilities wish offers 11 air-conditioned meeting rooms. An onsite health and fitness centre - which includes a sauna and whirlpool An onsite restaurant - The Junction Restaurant offering contemporary style British cuisine Whilst staying at the Holiday Inn my partner and I also sampled the delights of the room service, at 2am on the Sunday morning. Typically the main room service is available between 11am and 11pm, but a selection of sandwiches and drinks were available for us to choose from. The prices for sandwiches were a little steep ( GBP 6.50 each) plus we were to incur a GBP 2 room service charge, however on checkout it was discovered we had only been charged GBP 11 a nice little saving there. Overall I must admit that I found staying at the Holiday Inn, Southampton-Eastleigh an enjoyable experience, and although found the bar prices very off putting, the general atmosphere of the staff was very pleasing, and led to a relaxing stay. The rooms were well maintained and offered comfortable accommodation for the night, whilst we were in the area. As we were travelling to Marwell, the reception also arranged for a local taxi to take us. However I must mention that although my check out was extremely easy and I had no problems, the other couple with us were not so lucky. When we had originally booked the accommodation we both paid at the time of booking. This was partly because we wanted ease on our Finances at this time of year, and partly because the website said we couldn't confirm book without paying the first room - well as we were only staying for night we paid the full GBP 50 in October. However when the time came to check out, they were told that their original booking had been rejected at the time, and they had to pay the full cost now. This caused confusion as we had the original booking confirmations stating we had paid, however it was after this point that her card had been rejected. This wouldn't normally have been a problem, however at some point, the credit card company or Holiday Inn failed to tell her that her initial payment had been refused, and that she would be expected to pay when checking out this resulted in both parties becoming embarrassed which shouldn't have happened. She will be contacting the hotel in respect to this. But basically, what more can I say? The hotel was very pleasing and all four of us had a very enjoyable time. I would recommend the Holiday Inn if you are staying in the area, particularly as such attractions like Marwell Zoological Park (5miles away), Paultons Family Leisure Park (8Miles away) and other local attractions are so close, however it's a shame the bar prices were so high!
