Hotel Cambridge Lodge (Huddersfield)
Advantages: Very clean, friendly, free wireless internet, fridge in room, near town centre but quiet at night!
Disadvantages: None whatsoever!!!
At the weekend it was my youngest son's 21st birthday, with him going to Uni in Huddersfield we was looking for somewhere to stay while visiting ( we did have the offer of his double bed in his shared apartment with 5 others, but we declined!!!). Not wanting to stop at a Travelodge ( we usually stopped at the Woolley Edge one about 30 minutes drive away) as we wanted to be right near to the town and our son.
Well I spotted this Lodge on Bookings.com and mentioned this to my son some months back, but he came back with it not being a particular nice area and that it had some trouble in the past with buldings being burnt down, so I dismissed it. As my son goes running in a field that passes this building he decided to go and give it a look over for us.
He was pleasantly surprised and said we should give it a go. It is a fairly small lodge at the moment ( more on that later!) and only has 34 rooms. We chose a double room, but it also has twin rooms and family rooms as well. Each room has an en suite with shower, which I must say was very clean, with lovely white towels and a couple of small shower gel tubes on the sink with a mini bar of pears soap.
Although we requested a double I do believe it was a family room as it had a single bed as well as a double. You won't find any duvets, as this lodge ( well there wasn't in ours!) is different to your normal run of the mill
type. I was a bit unsure at first as when I looked at the bedding ( the first thing I do when I arrive!) I discovered clean white sheets, with a very pretty lavender cellular blanket, which was then covered in a very pretty white bedspread that had the most lovely embroidery all over it. Thinking that I would be cold that night, how wrong was I!. It was really snug and cosy and we didn't even have the heating on as the room
was lovely and warm.
Now what really made this a lovely stay was that in each room you will find a full size fridge with a bottle of milk in ready to have with the tea and coffee that is supplied. The fridge was spotless and was a great asset to have to put my white wine, beers, sons champagne, fruit juices, chocolate in, as well as me grabbing some cheeses that we could have with our wine later in the evening.
The room had a wall mounted flat screen TV ( around 19"/22" I'm useless with measurements) that had plenty of different channels with the freeview box. If I'm honest the furniture was fine, but on the dressing table it looked like someone had put something very hot on it and the wood had bubbled slightly. It also had a very modern trendy armchair that hubby chose to put his name on for all of the weekend. With modern pictures on the wall it was perfect for what we needed.
Now the price also included full english breakfast with toast, cereals, fruit, juices, tea and coffee. The breakfast room is fairly small holding about 10 tables all covered in a smart deep blue silky tablecloths. When we walked in it was about half full and we quickly chose a table to sit at. The waitress was over in a shot and took our order and brought our coffee out straight away followed by our toast. Literally a couple of minutes later our breakfast followed which was very nice indeed. They were very keen to see if we wanted anymore toast or coffee and always with a smile on their face as if it was no trouble at all.
We chose this lodge as our son literally lived 3-5 minutes walk away and it was only about 10 minutes walk into Huddersfield Town Centre which was great for us as we got the best of both here!
I wondered what it would be like at night, as hubby doesn't not like noisy people who are inconsiderate to other people, but both nights was a breeze as you could have heard a pin drop ( and my son had his girlfriends brother and 4 mates staying there as well THANKS SON!) so all went perfect!'
I was told that this lodge also had free wireless internet access within the lodge. I was a bit nervous about using it at first incase it was a limited amount before you were charged, but it was all free and it was nice to catch up with the others back home when I got a moment free.
We paid £50.00 per night for our stay so the total bill came to £100.00 which I think is brilliant for two nights and breakfast with all the little extra's that you don't usually get in other lodges. As I mentioned earlier this lodge only has 34 rooms at the moment, but once we got talking to the owner he explained that he was in the process of having another 40 plus rooms built for next year, the Cambridge Lodge has been opened for 11 years this April, so has been established for a while. As the owner said it is a very plain non fancy lodge, but does deliver the right atmosphere which is very friendly. We found that the other customers was a very mixed bunch from young couples, mature couples, singles, families, all of different nationalities.
We will be going back here to stay in the future as my son will be in Uni for the next several years, so this will become one of our new homes for the future. A very well deserved 5 Dooyoo stars, I would give more if possble!!
