      Very helpful

      Definitely worth considering

Planning a tourist trip to Edinburgh during the last week of the Fringe Festival proved to be very difficult as far as booking a hotel was concerned. In desperation we tried every major chain we could think of and hit pay dirt with the Novotel Edinburgh Centre. This review is based on a three night stay there on a bed and breakfast basis.

Location: The hotel is very conveniently located right next to the Edinburgh Art College. It's a 5 minute taxi ride from the station and it's even walking distance provided you don't mind an uphill walk. In fact it's walking distance from many places in Edinburgh provided you enjoy walking and therefore quire cheap to get there by taxi if you don't. There is a bus stop just across the road and one of the tourist buses stop there too so very convenient for seeing the city. The nearest shops and restaurants we found were a short, pleasant walk away near the university.

Rooms: The rooms were standard issue multinational hotel rooms. They were clean, and reasonably large and well maintained. The bed was quite comfortable and the bathroom was spotless. Each room had a bed, a desk and chair, a sofa and a rather small TV in it. There were some signs of wear and tear in the room - marks on the wallpaper, scuffs on the desk but all very minor. We probably wouldn't even have noticed if we weren't used to staying at the Marriott.

Breakfast: The breakfast buffet was excellent (apart from the ghastly veggie sausages) with loads of choice and quite tasty. We didn't appreciate having to get our tea and coffee ourselves (at the Marriott hot drinks are served at the table) but got used to it. Not much fun when the hot water dispensers were empty though. The buffet was replenished regularly.

Price: We got quite a cheap rate having booked our two double rooms for £79 per night. I believe it is normally in the region of £150 though they do offer a range of pricing options.

All in all it was a pleasant and convenient base to see Edinburgh and if not particularly exciting, at least it was clean, comfortable, reasonably priced and centrally located. What more could one ask for?
