Advantages: fairly accessible, most facilities, no surprises
Disadvantages: Golf, golfers, poor atmosphere if you're not there for the golf
I've been to the Belfry a couple of times on corporate business. It's a famous golf venue as well as a four star type hotel.
If you don't like golf, or are not impressed by the ethos, then the whole thing may be lost on you - it was on me.
Its expensive, and everything is top dollar. The rooms are small, and not particularly comfortable.
The overwhelming feeling I received when I was there, and this was on both occasions, is that the hotel makes you feel as if it is doing you a favour letting you do business with it.
The car park is full of serious metal. Astons, Ferraris, big BM's and so on. It's a thieves paradise, and whilst we were there last time, some of my colleagues had their cars broken into despite that fact that there was nothing more exotic than a Renault between us. A poor show from the hotel, as it is a magnet for problems.
The check in desk is busy, and its a good place to waste time. I never saw the price, but the rack rate was about £150 per day corporate off peak.
Food was ok, but as ususal, the buffet style lunch was a bit of a scramble. Our leader asked for some fresh fruit which was not on the menu. He was very specific about what he did not want, and that was exactly what he was offered. A private dining room was used, and the dinner served was excellent.
I have no time for nouveau riche sports fans, and one evening, it was the annual dinner of the local sports club. You can imagine the sort of clientele - my worst nightmare.
The other annoying aspect is the layout. It is on a long corridor, and it takes ages to get from one facility to another, and the rooms are also out of the way.
However, if you love golf...........you're in for a treat.
