      Houseboat

House boat hotels We were recently in London and Little Miss had a good idea to stay for an extra night somewhere half way between the halls of residence and our house. After a little bit of searching, we found these hotel houseboats which looked a bit different and went ahead to book for the night. LOCATION... After booking, I received an e mail from Kathryn which explained exactly where the boats were located and which even gave information as to where we should park for best access to the boats. With the satnav set to the postcode, the boats were really easy to find and being in the centre of the city we knew we would have no trouble finding somewhere to eat. The actual location is very pleasant, with boats moored all along the waterway, small bridges across the water and a café and shops in the railway arches. THE BOATS... There are three award winning static houseboats: Ruby, Mallard and Lily May which claim to offer apartment style accommodation permanently moored in Sheffield's waterfront area, Victoria Quays. We originally tried to book the Ruby which has accommodation for three people but this wasn't available on our required date so for £79 which was £10more, we booked the Lily May, which can sleep four people. Also available is Mallard which is a 43ft long traditional narrow boat with a fixed double bedroom with a sofa in the living area, which can be used as a single bed. LILY MAY... We parked in the car park and took our stuff to the boat- it was easy to locate and well moored, and was a nice looking blue boat with flower pots on the front of the boat and two small benches. We had been sent details of the combination lock number to get into the boat but in the dark this was still quite tricky the first time we tried it, and it was lucky we had a torch. The double doors open wide which is good news because with only one of the doors open, it's a very slim fit! First impressions of the boat were very good. It is nicely decorated and very cosy with 4 comfy chairs and a table with a flat screen TV, music system and a fully equipped kitchens for anyone wanting to do a bit of self catering. There is also a log burner in the corner but we didn't try this out, because there was an electric radiator in each room to make the boat nice and war; with the clean wood features and colourful cushions it was a lovely place to sit in the evening. The Lily May is 50 foot long and so has two bedrooms but first we had to get through the bathroom. This is a very small room. There was a space for the shower with a pull round curtain, a sink and a toilet, which when it was used didn't seem to flush properly. I did text Kathryn and she got in touch with me immediately to tell us what to do about the toilet. This worked although Himself used the facilities across the bridge for showering and toileting. There is a fixed double bedroom and a fixed double berth - Little Miss was especially taken with the double berth which was really as we imagined a boat bed to be. It was a high bed with curtains to pull across the bed and a little porthole window. The other bedroom featured a double bed and both rooms have shelves and cupboards above the beds but not a lot of other storage space, so best to keep things in the case. CONTACT... We had a great stay in our small house boat. It was all very organised and everything we needed to know about the boat was sent via e mail. The whole boat was clean and well maintained with plenty of necessary items such as cleaning products, shower gel tea and coffee available. Little Miss worried that it was going to be quite rocky but it was actually very stable and the only movement we felt was when someone was getting on or off the boat. The bathroom is very small and because its so close to the bedrooms, I think you have to know the other guests well before going to the boat! Although we paid to get out of the car park when we went for an evening meal, a token had been left for when we left the boat for good. If anyone is visiting Sheffield and wants something a bit different, this is a great place to stay. Thanks for reading Daniela xx
