I have frequently seen Ibis hotel whenever we have been in France, where this hotel chain has its base, but for some reason have never stayed in any of its hotels. It's not that they have looked unattractive, far from it. It's not that we thought them expensive, in fact, I knew they had a reputation for good value for money.
It's just that we have always tended to use Campanile Motels, another French based hotel chain and also one found extensively in the UK. These always seem to be located just where we need them.
As it happened, I needed to stay in Chesterfield and on this occasion it just so happened that it was an Ibis hotel that was situated just where I needed it. The Ibis is conveniently and easily found off of the second roundabout after the end of the dual carriageway from the M1. It is a modern building in light coloured brick. You can't miss it.
The Reception area is very bright and behind it is found the lounge/buffet breakfast area. The Ibis doesn't have a restaurant as such.
The rooms are if quite adequate size. Mine had twin beds. There is an open wardrobe area by the door where clothes may be hung up. Opposite is the bathroom. The room itself has also a desk area and also a television. The furniture clearly isn't anything special. MFI is the word that comes to mind but it seems solid enough in spite of that.
There were the usual facilities and it looked like there was even a socket to hook up a modem for a computer although I didn't have cause to need to try it myself on this occasion.
The whole is brightly decorated. A window overlooks the main road into Chesterfield but noise was not a problem. I enjoyed a very good night's sleep although this may have been helped by the night out on the town I had
with customers, the reason for my visit!
In the morning the breakfast was what you would expect, continental style with cereals, tea and coffee and various fruits and breads. It was quite adequate for my needs. They have a TV on the breakfast area on which you can watch Breakfast TV whilst you "break your fast".
The total bill for my stay was just under £50, extraordinary value compared with what you would pay for similar accommodation on most hotels.
I will undoubtedly use the Ibis chain more now that I have had an opportunity to try one. It just goes to prove that most UK hotel chains really do take their customers for a ride. If the Ibis can provide basic decent quality accommodation at this price, why can't they all?
