I stayed in the Jarvis Cooden Beach hotel for a weekend away taking advantage of their special offer prices for weekend breaks in June. I chose this hotel because it was in a quiet village and so would provide a relaxing break, it was by the sea which made it all the more appealing and it was in a location within easy reach of various tourist attractions. The location of the hotel is excellent, easy to find it is in Cooden, just next to Bexhill on Sea. It's right next door to Cooden train station making it easy to get to if you don't have a car. The hotel isn't disturbed by noise from the train station either, which is something that I was worried about. The hotel is located next to the beach, there are gates leading from it's grounds onto the beach, allowing you to take pleasant strolls along the pebble beach, there were even some people brave enough to venture into the sea for a swim. The facilities at the hotel are good, there is both an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool, the indoor one is very small so if you want a real swim you have to use the outdoor pool. There is also a spa, steam room and sauna, plus a mini gym. We used these facilities towards the end of the day and it was lovely and quiet, we had the pool to ourselves a lot of the time. The food at the hotel is good, although not quite as good as I was expecting. The evening meal is a set menu with only a limited choice, four options per course, and I felt it was over priced for what you received. Breakfast is the standard self-service hotel breakfast with a wide range of options from cereal to fruit to a full cooked breakfast. There are 2 bars at the hotel, the tavern which is a small pub, and the cocktail lounge. The only bad point I have about this hotel is the staff; I found a significant number of them to be rude and unhelpful, particularly the reception staff. Our room had not been cleaned properly before our arrival and there were several ite
ms of rubbish around the room, plus a discarded sock on the floor. Dirty linen and glasses also remained in the corridor for over a day after it had been removed from another room. It was after complaining that our room had not been cleaned that the reception staff suddenly became unhelpful. If you particularly want to visit this part of the country and are looking for somewhere to stay than I would certainly recommend this hotel as it is a very nice hotel, and seemed a lot more appealing than any of the hotels we saw in the surrounding area. I'd also recommend it if you are just looking for somewhere to use as a base and will be out exploring for the majority of your stay. However if you are looking for a nice hotel to stay in for a short break and don't intend to do much travelling when you get there then I would suggest you look elsewhere as, for me anyway, the staff in this hotel spoil what would otherwise be a very pleasant, relaxing stay.
