Advantages: Value, comfort, cleanliness, location for exploring.

Disadvantages: Mix up about breakfast

I stayed here last September on a special deal I got through the Co-operative travel club. The rate was incredibly reasonable for bed and breakfast, given the standard of the hotel and the location.

We arrived by train at Kings Cross station, which is straight down Pentonville Road. I am not sure of the exact distance, but it didn't look far on a map! However, with luggage it was quite a fair walk, maybe about 15-20 minutes. At the end of our stay, we jumped on a bus right opposite the hotel (and included in our travel pass we'd been using on the tube). This was very convenient and drops off right outside Kings Cross and St Pancras.

On arrival at the hotel, we only waited 5 - 10 minutes to be let into our hotel, despite turning up before the published check-in time, which was great as we could drop our bags off safely before going off to explore.

The room was relatively spacious for London, very clean, light and airy. The bathroom in particular was very clean. As it was my husband's 30th birthday, when we entered the room there was a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket with 2 flutes, and a box of Thorntons chocs. We later worked out that my dad had arranged this, ringing the hotel and asking him to do this. For a hotel of this standard to oblige and provide good quality chocs and champagne served in an ice bucket was impressive. After all, it is really a tourist hotel. The view from the room was suprisingly good aswell, we could see right across the city, including the London Eye.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful throughout the stay, and provided maps and information about public transport etc if you asked them.

The hotel was located right in the heart of Islington, so within a very short walk were cafes, pubs, restaurants, markets and high street shops (Boots, Next etc), plus a full - size Sainsburys supermarket. The atmosphere was good and didn't feel unsafe at all, even on an evening.

The Angel tube station is just round the corner from the hotel, around 5 minutes walk, and provides great links on the northern line to the rest of London.

There was a decent pub next door, I can't remember the name, but a good range and wines and beers and a lovely sun terrace if you hit the good weather.

Only issue we had was that the reception staff said that breakfast wasn't included in the deal. Luckily I had my paperwork which confirms that it was, so we had a full English both days, and the selection and freshness was superb. Especially given what we had paid.

If you don't have breakfast included, it isn't much extra to pay for it, or the other option is the Wetherspoons which is just round the corner and on the way to the tube station!

All in all, great value and a good base for exploring the rest of the city. Especially for those travelling from the north into Kings Cross or St Pancras.

Summary: Would definitely stay there again
