On another visit to York this weekend, we stayed again at this hotel.
Sad to say, I've had to reduce the number of stars from 4 to 3.
1. reception staff not really as attentive as on our previous visit. Well, the evening staff seemed to be almost disinterested in newly arriving guests, to be frank. That said, the staff on in the morning were extremely helpful.
2. The rooms seem to be verging on the shabby. One of my pet hates - mouldy shower curtain - something that can so easily be changed, sums up the attidtude to general maintenance and refurbishment.
Still, it only cost me £60.00 for a double room for bed and breakfast, via laterooms.com.
Just don't ever pay the full price to stay here, or you'll feel like you've been conned.

Here’s a hotel complex with a difference – with a bit of history, I mean. It’s made up of 6 historic listed buildings, situated near Skeldergate in York, within the city walls. The oldest of these was built in 1659, due to an endowment from Dame Anne Middleton, the wife of the Sheriff of York at the time. Other buildings include a restored old sawmill and an organ factory. The bedrooms have plenty of character – uneven floors, very low doorways… There’s a lovely courtyard garden, and in another garden there are little pools with goldfish in them – also, for a city centre hotel, it’s surprisingly quiet.
The hotel is close to the centre of York, and very near to the river. This did present some problems during the floods, and renovation work has been needed on some of the lower floors. The swimming pool was badly affected – (yes, the swimming pool was badly affected by the floods!) so sadly we couldn’t make use of that during our stay. There is also a health and fitness club, available to hotel residents,
as long as you’re over 16, free of charge. There is a charge for the solarium, however.
There are 52 bedrooms in all.
Two ground floor rooms are appropriate for wheelchair users.
Rooms cost £80.00 (single), £110.00 (double) or £130.00 for a family room – the cost is not per person. It includes breakfast.
A la carte dinner is from £16.95, but we did not bother with that. If the breakfasts are anything to go by, though, I imagine it will be a rewarding experience. The restaurant seemed to be swarming with staff, all doing their best to ensure everyone had fresh toast, enough tea, and so on. The full English breakfast includes black pudding, as well as the usual things, and kippers are also available. The only thing that let things down slightly was the coffee.
Our double room had a four poster bed, which we didn’t ask for, but I don’t
think that’s standard in all the rooms. It didn’t seem to cost us any extra, though. The facilities in the room were very good, you can make your own tea and coffee. The only downside was the bathroom – en suite of course, but no working shower, due to low water pressure, and it was all a bit avocado-70s- style, too.
Parking can be a little difficult – there is a car park but it seems to get very full, and it’s easy to get blocked in.
To sum up, worth a visit if you manage to get a special deal, but don’t pay the full price.
