      Location.Location Location

The Compleat Angler Hotel is in Marlow, Buckinghamshire and has a wonderfully picturesque setting by the River Thames and I can recommend it as the perfect location for a one or two night short break.. My friend and I had been walking a great deal the day before exploring the culture, colleges and the history of Oxford, we were exhausted as we had only stopped for one drink all day , unable to relax as there was so much to see and so many bookshops to explore. So we decided that as Marlow was so nearby it would be an ideal relaxed stopover on our way back to London, not least because we it would be a scenic drive. We paid £150 one nights bed and breakfast-it is pricey- but this was a treat. The hotel, part of the Macdonald chain is situated on the bank of the River Thames and despite there being a wedding at the hotel during our stay, there was plenty of free parking. The check in was easy and you get to sit down to check in - very civilised. We were staying in the annexe -not overlooking the river as this was would have incurred an additional cost. The room was very large with twin beds, television, desk, table and chairs, mini fridge and an in- room hot drinks facility. There was an ice bucket set on the table, with complimentary bottles of water and it is the first time I have ever stayed in a hotel that has crystal drinking glasses. There was also a complimentary magazine as well as hotel and area guides. There was not only the usual iron and hairdryer, but also two luxurious white towelling robes. The bathroom had both a bath and a walk in power shower. Loads of towels and for me the piece de resistance- Molton Brown toiletries.

The bed linen was a liitle odd- but incredibly comfortable as it was like having a duvet under you - very, very comfy.

There are excellent bars and award winning restaurants in the hotel, but we only sampled the bar outside by the river- which was no more pricey than you would expect from a 4 star hotel- but certainly worth it to enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the Thames in such wonderful surroundings.

We didn't eat dinner in the hotel- there was no need to- as within minutes you can walk across the bridge and be in Marlow which has a plethora of choice. We walked all around the town , twice before making our choice as to where we would retun for dinner.

Marlow is a lovely town and although you will see stores you wll recognise from any high street, there are many more that are either unique to the area or at least not on every street in the the U.K.. So take your wallet- or don't- if you get my drift! You will find a Waitrose and a Marks and Spencers Simply Food- ideal for picking up some tasty afternoon snacks , or post dinner nibbles back at the hotel. Room Service was available but they charged £3 per room visit onto hotel prices- so we were being prudent.

We had a wonderful night's sleep and we were equally delighted with the breakfast. It was well served in the restaurant overlooking the river, there was an element of self service but mainly it was waiter/waitress served. There were a couple of items on the menu that attracted a supplement- but you didn't need to pay it, as the choice was superb and plentiful- most locally sourced, organic and free range.

The service was courteous and friendly, a liitle slow at times, but as I said there was a very large wedding party, not only having the rwedding eception there, but also staying at the hotel. This shouldn't be an excuse, but nothing occured that spoilt our enjoyment.

There is an express check out facility if you are in a hurry to leave- but I am glad I went to pay, as whilst I was happy to pay the voluntary £1 donation to charity - I was not happy to pay the £2 charge for paying by credit card- that does seem a "bit off" with their prices. I also found that they had added an extra service charge for our bar drinks- which was not correct as we had left a cash tip.

Overall, I would say that if you are used to staying and paying for this standard ot hotel then you wont be disappointed. For those of us that would not normally stretch our budgets that far, then make it a choice if it's for a birthday or anniversary treat. I would also suggest you time your stay for either the spring or the summer to appreciate the location.
