Mercure London Paddington Hotel (London)
Advantages: Easy to get to, comfortable modern rooms.
Disadvantages: Rooms are a tad on the small side.
A couple of Canadian friends said that they were coming over to the UK for a few days and wouldn't it be great if we could meet up. I asked them which hotel they were staying in and said that I'd have a look around to see if I could get a deal. The hotel that they'd chosen to stay in was The Mercure Hotel London Paddington, part of the Accor Hotel Chain which includes amongst others Ibis and Novotel hotels.
Well after looking round all the hotel booking websites I finally arrived at the Accor Hotel's own website, which promised the lowest rates on the net if I joined their loyalty program. Well seeing as this was free and could all be completed on line I went ahead and did it. Once registered I was able to book directly with them, without going through a middle man and the prices were slightly cheaper. The booking process was very easy, I simple chose the hotel I wanted, put in the dates that I wanted and clicked to see what the availability was. I was then presented with options for the size of the room I wanted and it was at this point that I was presented with two options for the price of the room. I could either pay the whole stay up front or pay just a deposit which had the option to cancel the booking, whilst the up front one did not. I paid the whole balance up front as this worked out to be the cheapest option. I know some people might see this as a gamble, what if something happens and I can't make the trip, but we have travel insurance so we could have claimed it back from there.
When we arrived at the hotel, the check in process was pretty straight forward as we'd already prepaid everything and my loyalty card number had already been appiled. There was a little problem in that the credit card I'd booked the hotel on had been renewed in the interim period and so the number had changed, but that was soon remedied. The staff were very welcoming and attentive.

Executive Room with twin beds:-Executive twin room (approx size 26 sqm) - two 100cm wide beds, full airconditioning, ADSL & Wifi internet, 32" flat screen TV, iPod dock, safe, complementary soft drinks in mini fridge, bathrobes and slippers, trouser press, access to the hotel gym.
I chose the Standard Room with 1 double bed and I'm glad I did as it was still rather small. The room consisted of a desk and chair as you walked in on one wall of the room with the bathroom door opposite which then opened out into the bed area where you had approximately two feet of room on either side of the bed and a wardrobe. The television was mounted on the wall at the foot of the bed. The bathroom although small was functional and consisted of a wash basin, toilet and shower cubical, no bath. The room was clean and tidy with a modern design of brown furniture and brown curtains and bed throw, although the bedding was white. The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning was very welcome after being out all day in the heat. Althougth this hotel is situated on a main road, we hardly heard any loud traffic noise, apart from ambulances and police cars, but then we were on the 4th floor. All rooms are accessable via a lift or stairs.
The hotel was easy to get to via the London Underground on either the Circle, District, Bakerloo or Hammersmith & City lines, the entrance being just across the street and Paddington Train Station is just next door. There are plenty of places to eat in the area, including Garfunkels which is attached to the hotel as it doesn't have it's own restaurant, this is where breakfast is served. There are such named brands as Burger King, MacDonalds, KFC and Costa Coffee, as well as independent cafes and delis and pubs all within easy walking distance of the hotel. The hotel does have it's own bar, but this is only very small, with perhap six chairs at most, but we didn't use it, as we found the pub up the road to be more spacious and had a larger selection of drinks.
All in all this is a lovely hotel and I would stay there again, the staff did seem genuine about wanting to make our stay as good as possible, even down to letting us keep our key cards as mementos when we left.
Plus if you want a bit of history on your doorstep, just round the corner from the hotel is the hospital where Prince William was born and more recently his son Prince George. We were there when they left and got to see them drive passed.
Summary: Lovely hotel, easy to get to, reasonably priced for a London hotel
