Advantages: Leisure Club, Location

Disadvantages: Average Rooms

I stayed in the Milton over a weekend in March 2001. Myself and my girlfriend stayed on a sepcial 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast basis. The hotel is easy to find, just outside the centre of Fort William. The recpetion was moderately friendly and our room had a reasonable view out over the beautiful countryside. The standard of the rooms was good for the sort of price you pay for the hotel. The best feature of the entire hotel is the leisure club which is really ideal to just relax and unwind. You can sit in the jacuzzi and look up to a waterfall on Ben Nevis - Heaven. There is also steam room, sauna, gym, etc.

The meals we were served gave us a good choice and the food was ok. Nothing special but again it was good value for money. There was a good wine list and the waiters were all helpful. The bar is has a good atmosphere with a mix of all sorts of people and is a nice place for a pre-dinner drink. In general, I would recommend this hotel, there were no problems and the accommodation was very acceptable. What puts it a notch above average is the leisure club which is well worth experiencing. And of course the location, which at the foot of Ben Nevis, takes some beating.

Fort William itself is not my favourite town. It is very obvious that it is a tourist resort and it is by no means typical Scotland. But there are some friendly bars and some interesting shops, as well as a large supermarket. The surroundings however take some beating. If you have not climbed Ben Nevis, you should put it on your 'to do' list. Its not as difficult as it sounds and the lower parts make for a lovely walk. For the less physically active, you can get the gondola at Annoch Moor up to nearly the same level. But of course you have to pay for this (I think about £7).

In general, I would recommend Fort William as a base for exploring this area, but dont expect too much from the town itself. You will be spoiled for choice for walk
s which will take your breath away (literally!) Also, if you travel by car, stop off at Glencoe and take in some of the scenery there as well - spectacular!

One final warning though - dont go to Fort William in the middle of a foot and mouth crisis or all the walks will be closed, DOH!!!
