Dukes Hotel ... is perhaps less of a hotel review than a lament for a grand old Belfast building. I have not stayed in Dukes but have spent some evenings there and it is a pleasant but not remarkable place. My point is that Dukes was a very imposing Victorian building in a great location, a red brick, monumental, vaguely French edifice. However, my problem is that the place has been allowed to be utterly vandalised within the last few years and by its owners not nameless hooligans. When first developed years ago as a hotel Dukes was quite well regarded. It looked handsome, had a nice bar and was near everything in the University area. The Causeway Hotel ... wife and I have been to the Causeway Hotel at the giants Causeway on a number of occasions. A few years ago my wife held my fiftieth birthday party there, in all I think there were about twenty two people that attended, from some of my best friends to my granddaughter. The place itself, the rooms, the atmosphere and the food is somewhat magical, in fact my wife Lynda calls it "heaven on earth". Back in July two thousand and six my wife and I spent the weekend in the causeway hotel for our thirtieth wedding anniversary. The Londonderry Arms Hotel (Antrim) ... a recent visit to Northern Ireland,finely documented in a previous post, I was lucky enough to be shown round by someone born and bred in Larne. It was on her suggestion that we paid a visit to the Londonderry Arms, a 3 star hotel with two restaurants in the charming and quaint harbour village of Carnlough. Carnlough is about 15 minutes drive north of Larne along the very picturesque coastal road otherwise known as the A8.
