Advantages: Good location
Disadvantages: Slow check in
I have stayed here twice now and have had a mixed experience of the place. My first visit was in 2007 as part of a weekend away with friends. I stayed in a standard double room and for £80 per night the room was huge. There was a massive window around most of the room so had excellent views of the city. The bathroom was lovely, very modern and clean and stocked up with loads of complementary toiletries. The bar area downstairs was great and for a hotel very reasonable (£.70 for a large glass of house wine).
The hotel appeared immaculate and super modern and I was really impressed so decided to revisit in 2008 with my boyfriend.
Arrived on a weekend and got a good deal (make sure you negotiate with the hotel directly) for B & B and one nights stay for both of us in the penthouse it was £140 per night. With this you got a free bottle of wine and chocolates in the room.
The penthouse its self was jusk ok. This was made up of a living/ dining area and a toilet, a separate bedroom and a huge bathroom. The bathroom was gorgeous but the shower cubicle leaked and flooded the bathroom. The bedroom was small and I preferred the space in the standard room. The furniture was shabby and just looked old and worn.
Check in was a nightmare it took 30 minutes as the room wasn't ready despite arriving at 4.00pm and it stated check in was from 2pm. Check out was just as bad as there was only one person on the desk and a lot of people checking out at the same time. Also the hotel charged us for things out of the mini bar, although we didn't have anything out of the mini bar. In the haste to prepare the room they obviously hadn't restocked the mini bar. It took me four weeks and six phone calls to the hotel to ensure that they refunded the money to me.
I probably wouldn't go back to the hotel, it seems to need updating and the staff are just plain rude. The location of the hotel is great as it is right next to the train station but if you are looking for a better hotel in the same price bracket then I would go to the Queens Hotel which is opposite the hotel.
Summary: Mixed experience but a modern hotel in a good location
