“ Address: Dundee / Scotland „
Piperdam Lodges is a small holiday park at Fowlis, which is on the outskirts of Dundee in Scotland. It is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, family holiday or even a golfing break, as there is an 18 hole golf course on the site!
The park itself is surrounded by over 500 acres of countryside and is built around a 40 acre loch, where you can go fishing. It is very scenic.
I came across Piperdam while browsing through the Hoseasons holiday brochure three years ago and thought it seemed a nice place to go for a short break with my partner.
I booked a 4 night break and we enjoyed it so much, we have returned four times since then!
The accomodation are lodges of varying sizes. The photo on this review is of one of the largest lodges which I believe has five or six bedrooms. Since there was only myself and my partner we opted for a 'Muirloch executive lodge' which is a single storey lodge but more luxurious than the basic 'Osprey' or Rainbow' lodges. It sounded and looked fantastic in the brochure, and on arriving we were not disappointed!
Check-in was quick and easy and although we had arrived early, we were given the keys to our lodge right away, and this has also happened on our subsequent visits.
All the staff who work at Piperdam are friendly and welcoming and it was especially nice to be remembered and welcomed back when we returned for another break!
We have only ever encountered one problem ,which was a fault with the hot water, during one of our stays. We reported this to reception and someone came to the lodge right away and put it right.
The Muirloch lodges have everything you could want for a romantic break, they are for couples only, but are very spacious and luxurious. A bottle of red and a bottle of white wine were placed on the table when we arrived. Which I thought was a nice touch. Some small sachets of coffee, tea, sugar, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets were also included. The lodges are immaculate, everywhere is spotless!
The lounge, dining room and kitchen are open plan with underfloor heating. A washing machine/dryer, fridge, dishwasher, cooker and microwave are in the kitchen, whilst the cupboards have plenty of pans, crockery, utensils, cutlery and even an ice bucket!
There is a dining table and chairs, a flat screen LCD TV with surround sound speakers, DVD player and a stove fire. A very comfortable sofa and chairs in front of the fire give it a cosy feel.
The bedroom is absolutely fantastic, with a large four poster bed, made up for your arrival with cushions and a throw on the top to add to its appeal. Also bedside cabinets with lamps, a wardrobe, blanket chest, drawers and dressing table all in heavy oak. There was also a flat screen TV on the wall.
The bathroom is large with patio doors leading out onto a verandah where there is a fabulous hot tub!, We spent the evenings in the hot bubbles under the stars with a glass of wine, watching the rabbits running around on the grass.
In the bathroom itself was a shower toilet and sink, and also a sauna! This was ideal for jumping in when coming out of the hot tub, and also handy for drying your towels in afterwards!
The lodges are set in a woodland setting and spaced out quite well. Although you can see the other lodges, there is plenty of privacy.
All the lodges have hot tubs except for Rainbow and Osprey lodges. There is also a Vegas style lodge complete with six en-suite bedrooms, roulette wheel, card table and snooker table, and a family bungalow with four bedrooms and a Wii themed room!
Facilities on the site include a 20m swimming pool, complete with sauna, steam room and spa, a gym, tennis courts, an 18 hole golf course, a smaller 9 hole golf course, fishing, children's play park and an Osprey centre, where you can find information and hopefully see the Ospreys which nest at the loch each year.
The restaurant is really nice with views overlooking the loch. The meals were absolutely gorgeous, and although a little on the expensive side, the portions were large and everthing tasted delicious. The steak melted in my mouth. We tend to visit the restaurant for one meal during our stay and have paid around £40 - £45 for a meal for two including starters and wine.
Meals are also served in the bar area, such as burgers and wraps etc which is a cheaper option.
The only downside I can think of is that there is no shop on the site. We always take food and some basics with us but if you run out of milk etc then you have to drive to the village. I think it would be a good idea if they had a small shop on the site selling some essentials. They do seem to be building more lodges on the site, and it has grown since we first visited so maybe it is something they will add in time.
It is a five minute drive to the nearest village where there are a couple of shops, garage with Co-op store and a nice pub which also serves meals.
A further five minute drive down the road brings you to Camperdown park which is an ideal day out. The park is large and has a play area as well as some fairground rides and a wildlife park. Entry to Camperdown Park is free but you do have to pay to enter the wildlife park.
Next to Camperdown Park is a cinema, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and a bar which is adjacent to a Premier Inn and serves nice meals, which were 2 for 1 last time we visited.
Dundee itself is only a few mins drive from Piperdam, or if you prefer you could go for a drive around the surrounding countryside.
Perth racecourse is not far away by car, and we have enjoyed a day at the races whilst staying at Piperdam.
Prices vary according to the type of lodge and time of year you visit. I have paid around £190 - £200 for a Mon - Fri break in November and April in a Muirloch Executive lodge, and between £230 - £260 for a Mon-Fri break in June, which I think is a good price. Fri - Mon or full week breaks are also available. The Rainbow and Osprey lodges are cheaper and the two-storey lodges more expensive, but these are designed for large families so you could share the cost with family members for a bargain luxury break.
You may even find some offers available when making your booking, such as discount for early booking or money-off offers.
Piperdam is one of my favourite places to visit and I will be booking to return again soon. It is an ideal place to unwind and relax in a peaceful and scenic setting.
