On a recent drive up to Inverness, we decided to stay overnight on both the journey up and again on the way back down, just to break it up a little. Although we could have managed the drive without a stop-over, I was tempted by the fact it is possible to book some Premier Inn rooms for as little as £29 if booked a month in advance and by breaking the journey up we would not be as tired.
Although we have stayed in Glenrothes before, this has always been at the Holiday Inn Express and not the Premier Inn. It would have been possible to book a room at the Holiday Inn Express for the date we required, but as the Premier Inn was also available at £29 which was considerably cheaper, we decided to give it a try and booked a double room for one night via the Premier Inn website, which was a very simple process. An email confirming my booking was sent to me immediately and although you must enter debit/credit card details when booking, the actual payment is not taken until you arrive at the hotel.
~~ Premier Inn, Glenrothes~~
Glenrothes is situated in Fife, between major roads from Edinburgh and Dunfermline to Dundee. Although Glenrothes is not exactly a tourist destination, it provides an ideal base to tour the South-East of Scotland as well as being an ideal place to stop-over when travelling further up into the Highlands or on return. Indeed I have stayed over in Glenrothes for these very reasons on a number of occasions, as Scotland is a place I love to visit on a regular basis.
The Premier Inn is situated on Beaufort Drive, just off a busy roundabout opposite the large Amazon warehouse. However, as it is set quite a way back off the roundabout and away from the roadside, it is fairly quiet. I was actually quite surprised at just how quiet it was to be honest. Also despite having driven over the roundabout a number of times on previous visits to Glenrothes, I had never actually noticed the Premier Inn, as it isn't exactly right next to the roundabout, so you can be confident that traffic noise is not an issue when staying at this hotel.
We found the hotel fairly easily following the directions provided on the website and of course being familiar with the roundabout where Amazon is located, it didn't pose any problems, as it was simply a case of heading to the roundabout then taking the turn off for the hotel. Even if you are not familiar with Glenrothes then finding the hotel shouldn't be difficult as the main route in and out of Glenrothes seems to take you over this roundabout.
The hotel has two floors and plenty of free car-parking spaces to accomodate guests. Adjacent to the Premier Inn is the Brewers Fayre pub/restaurant, 'Bankhead Gate' which serves meals and drinks and also has an outdoor children's play area.
~~ Our Stay ~~
Check-in was from 2pm and it was around 3pm when we arrived. There was nobody on Reception as we entered, but a friendly woman appeared shortly after and welcomed us, giving us all the necessary information, including what time meals were served until in the restaurant and informing us that this was also where breakfast would be served the following morning. We had not booked any breakfast but were told we could just turn up if we changed our minds.
We were allocated a room on the upstairs floor overlooking the front of the hotel and the car park. The hotel was undergoing some building work to the rear, where it looked as if they are extending the hotel. As our visit was on a Sunday, there was no work taking place and so I cannot comment on whether there is much noise from this.
Our room was very spacious with a large double bed with four pillows and a chair in one corner. Open hanging space and work space with another chair placed in front of a mirror ran along the wall opposite the bed. A CRT TV sat upon the work space as well as a small kettle and sachets of tea/coffee etc. There was also a larger full-length mirror on the same wall, but nearer the window.
The room was light and airy and spotlessly clean and apart from the fact it is nicer to see LCD flat-screen TV's in hotel rooms now, I had no cause for any complaints.
The bathroom was also spotless with an overhead shower above the bath. Fluffy white towels were provided and shower gel and soap were housed in wall dispensers. The shower was quite powerful and there was plenty of hot water.
The room had the Premier Inn 'purple theme' which is a trademark of this hotel chain. This room had more purple in it than some of the other Premier Inns we have stayed at, with purple carpet, curtains, chair, headboard, bed runner and a contemporary purple print above the bed. This sounds like a lot of purple, but it wasn't actually too much as the furniture and crisp white bed linen provided a contrast. Also I am rather fond of the colour purple so it wasn't an issue.
We decided to have an evening meal in the adjacent restaurant, which we really enjoyed. There was plenty to choose from on the menu and they also have specials such as an all-you-can-eat curry buffet. The prices were very reasonable as was the service and overall food quality, so again no complaints from me. I was also quite surprised and impressed when on ordering a side order of onion rings to accompany our meals, a large dish arrived containing 20 (yes 20!) onion rings! Hence to say, we left the restaurant feeling rather stuffed!
We spent a very comfortable, quiet night at Glenrothes Premier Inn. The bed and the pillows were very comfortable which is something I have found that Premier Inns now seem to excel at. Having experienced lumpy, hard, or dented mattresses at Travelodges and one or two other hotels, having a good, comfortable nights sleep is always of importance and this is exactly what we experienced here. Indeed, Premier Inn offer a good night guarantee, where by you can receive a refund if not happy.
Check-out was at noon the following day and we were asked if everything had been ok for us, then thanked for staying and wished a safe journey home.
I would definitely stay at Glenrothes Premier Inn again and if you can secure a £29 room as I did you are getting an excellent bargain!
