Premier Inn (Manchester Airport Runger Lane)
Advantages: Great prices, close to airport
Disadvantages: Pricey shuttle bus
We live a good two hours away from Manchester Airport. We have found the easiest and, with petrol prices as high as they are, often cheapest way to get to the airport is by train. This is great for us, however last year our flight departed first thing in the morning, leaving us no choice but to get a train down the afternoon before and spend the night in Manchester.
Previously, we had stayed at Bewleys hotel which was brilliant. This time round we were on more of a budget, and because of this I reluctantly booked the Premier Inn. At just £29 for a double room it was half the price of Bewleys.
We arrived by train to Manchester quite late in the evening. We decided to just grab a black cab from outside the station which cost around £6 and took just over 5 minutes. Be sure to have the address of the Premier Inn handy as the chain does have two hotels close to the airport. Premier Inn run a hotel shuttle bus from the train station and each of the terminals. In my opinion though, it is very pricey. Last July they were charging £4 each way or £6 return, and prices may well have increased since my stay. When you compare this to how much we paid for a black cab, it is very overpriced.
Check in was fast. I showed the lady on the check in desk my email confirmation and we were quickly given our room key and pointed in the direction of our room. All very quick and easy.
After paying just £29 for a hotel so close to the airport we were not so sure what to expect. However we were impressed. The rooms were pretty large, and very clean which is all I care about on a short stay like this. The bathrooms on the other hand are tiny, with just a shower cubicle and toilet. The basin is just outside in the main room which is a bit strange but not a problem at all.
Compared to other Travelodge and Premier Inn hotels we have stayed in we were very impressed with the decor. It was very modern, and appeared to have been only recently decorated.
I was also pleased with how comfortable the bed was. We had a great night's sleep, without any disturbance during the night. Undisturbed sleep in airport hotels can often be a problem, with people coming and going all through the night, but we were not woken at all. Furthermore, despite the close proximity to the airport, we did not hear any aircraft noise whatsoever.
We very rarely eat at hotel restaurants, but after arriving pretty late in the evening we decided to order from the cafe bar. We were expecting high prices, but we were pleasantly surprised. During our visit was an offer on were we could get two courses for around £10, but even without this offer meals were reasonably priced. The choice was pretty good. However, there was no room left in the restaurant area so we ended up eating in our room. This was our own fault as we were asked to book a table on arrival, but decided to hold off doing so. To be completely honest, the food itself wasn't fantastic. For example the chips were greasy and soggy. They also got our starters wrong but it was too late to start messing about to get them to change it. I'm sure if we had complained we would have got what we had ordered, but all we really wanted to do was eat up, shower and get some sleep ready for our early flight.
For the price of the room I was pretty impressed. We actually stayed at Bewleys' the night we returned from our holiday, and we were very disappointed. We were given an awful room, with the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in, and we were woken in the early hours by hovering outside of our room. The Premier Inn will be my first choice should we need to stay near the airport again, and is fantastic value for money.
