My partner and I had visited The Imperial at Blackpool, which is one of the sixteen hotels owned by the Paramount Group and had decided to join their Leisure Break Club which offers discounted breaks at their hotels.
As we had enjoyed our stay there so much I decided to book a break at another of their hotels, as part of my partner’s birthday present.
We had two nights for the price of one at the Prince of Wales Hotel, which is a Victorian building situated in Lord Street, Southport, on the west coast of England just north of Liverpool.
The hotel has 103 en suite bedrooms many with views across the town and the hotel garden. We had a lovely room on the side of the hotel. It was spacious with all the usual benefits of tea making facilities, television, telephone, trouser press and hair dryer.
The only problem with having a room on the side of the hotel was the fact that the local night clubs close at 2am and the people leaving tend to congregate in that particular street to chat and wait for taxis. This meant that we were disturbed for about an hour and a half in the early hours on Sunday morning, as it was almost 4 o’clock before everyone had gone home!
There is only a small car park at the Prince of Wales so this does mean that you may have to park in the street. I was a bit concerned about the safety of the car when there were so many people who were the worse for drink hanging around in the wee small hours, but it was OK.
The hotel does not have it’s own leisure club but guests are invited to use the facilities at the nearby Victoria Sports and Leisure Club, where you are entitled to complimentary use of the swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi.
The meals at the hotel, served in the Colonial Restaurant, were very good, although not quite as good as at the Imperial in our opinion. The breakfast consisted of a choice of fruit juice and cereal followed by a cooked breakfast served buffet s
tyle completed with toast and tea or coffee. The evening meal was a carvery where you could help yourself to as much as you wanted, with the starter and sweet being served to your table.
The Clubhouse Bar serves a wide variety of drinks and is an ideal place for a pre dinner drink and a brandy afterwards! There is a lot of golf memorabilia here as the Prince of Wales is close to no lees than eleven championship golf courses including Royal Birkdale.
As I said earlier the hotel is situated in Lord Street which is a veritable shopper’s paradise. The major stores are all represented but there is also a host of designer shops selling everything from jewellery and clothes to furniture.
We were more interested in the fact that the funfair situated on the promenade was open even though it was only March when we visited. We subsequently discovered that this and Blackpool Pleasure Beach both open during the weekends in March each year pricing the rides at 80p each, which is a lot cheaper than their usual price!
There is a brilliant wooden roller coaster for the purists amongst us; and many other ‘white knuckle’ rides. The big ride there is The Traumatizer, which is a roller coaster where you are suspended beneath the track in the same way as on Nemesis at Alton Towers. You are taken through a 360-degree loop and two or three barrel turns – an excellent ride!
There are plenty of smaller less scary rides for the children too, and although I wasn’t particularly thrilled with Southport as a resort being neither a dedicated shopper nor a golfer, I wouldn’t mind returning for another session on the fair!
Anyway back to the hotel itself for my final comments. I enjoyed my stay here even though I didn’t find the food at the hotel as good as at the Imperial and the noise during the night was annoying but no fault of the hotel.

I would expect from any of the hotels in the Paramount Group, and they were always on hand to make sure that our stay was as good as possible for us.
