Roxburghe Hotel (Edinburgh)
Advantages: Central location
Disadvantages: Busy if weddings or functions are on
Stayed at the Edinburgh Macdonald Hotel "The Roxburghe" for 2 nights in September 2009 in a standard double room. This hotel is one of the more pricey hotels in the area, but worth spending the extra in my opinion, especially if you break is a bit of a treat.
The red carpet and on arrival porter service is just the start of the excellent service that you will receive during your stay.
We arrived early and our bags were safely stored for us until our room was ready which allowed us to start exploring Edinburgh.
Bedrooms are really spacious with power showers, extra large beds, flat screen TV's and refridgerators.
We did not get to eat in the Dining Room for dinner as it was fully booked, however the food served all day in the bar area are lovely. I can recommend the haggis, neeps and tatties for a light lunch. Breakfast was buffet style with an option of cooked or continental or smoked haddock or kippers. Service at breakfast seemed a little disorganised, but we were quite late going down for breakfast.
As the hotel is quite central, there are plenty of dining options nearby. Browns Brasserie to the rear of the hotel is exceptional, as is the Witchery near the Castle.
The hotel is a short walk from the main rail station (Edinburgh Waverley) (10-15 minutes) down Princes Street. Due to road works on Princes Street, it is not possible to drive down here so a taxi will take just as long as to walk, but a wise option with heavy luggage.
The spa within the hotel is superb. They responded promptly to my e-mail enquiry beforehand and the booking process was painless! The therapist that I booked was attentive and friendly and there was no hard sell of products, just a few suggestions.
The pool area is clean but is in need of an update in my opinion. Definitley not state of the art facilities, but then again staying so centrally, there is often no leisure facilities at all.
I requested champagne to be delivered to the room as a surprise for my husband's Birthday before arrival at the hotel and the request was carried out exactly at the right time during our stay to ensure it was chilling as we returned to the room. I must admit, I fully expected to have to chase up where it was!
The bar staff were friendly and provided nibbles with pre-dinner drinks, however it was quite busy during our stay as both days there were weddings at the hotel.
Check out was quick and the hotel even stored our luggage until early evening when we collected it to return to the train station.
I would definitley stay here again and would happily recommend it to anybody. Worth Paying the extra.
Summary: Great Service
