The Bell Epping
On a recent visit to see our son at uni in London we decided to try out another hotel to the East of the city.
With the satnav going, we found the hotel really easily. It seems you come off the motorway and are straight onto Epping High Street, which is where the hotel is situated. This for us has been great as its close to several restaurants and about a five minute walk from the underground sation ( Central Line) - although no chance of getting parked through the week after 8am! There are plenty of restaurants which meant after a busy day in London we could get ourselves back in the vicinity of the hotel for a meal.
The hotel was originally a coaching inn and there is evidence of this in the older style building at the back- the front of the hotel seems to have been built on at a later date, which means it loses its olde worlde character. There is a newer part of the hotel built at the side which is visible from the road and has plenty of car parking spaces and surprisingly there are lots of trees so its all quite leafy.
The reception area is large with tables and chairs dotted around the room as well as a desk with a computer on it. There is free wifi which can be used in the bedrooms as well as in the reception area.
We had pre booked the hotel and when the receptonist saw the three of us she appeared a tad confused as she thought we had booked a room for two. This she quickly remedied by checking the room and when she discovered the room we had been allocated was for two guests she quickly changed room for us and told us there were three single beds- this was beginning to feel like the three bears!
We were given our room key and off we went. This is the bit which didn't especially impress me, as we had to walk through the main building, outside and then into a building which was built at the back of the hotel. This looked out onto another car park, so it had rather a motel feel. The corridors are clean and bright, and are painted brickwork with large windows so it's very light and airy and not gloomy as some hotels are.
The bedroom is one large light room with a big window looking out over some fields so again it was all quite countrified.
We had three single beds with a good space between each, as well as an open cupboard which served as the wardrobe, table with large mirror, tv, tea and coffee making facilities, and some drawer storage. Just about everything we could need for a short stay.
The niddle bed was obviously a pull out bed and so the mattress wasn't as thick as the mattress on the other two beds. The two proper beds were nice and sturdy with thick mattresses and all three beds had clean white bed inen although when we got into bed the duvets were tucked so tightly into the mattresses that they felt as though they had been stitched on!
The window was permanently open and the raditaor was permanently turned on so although for us this made it a perfect temperature for October I couldn't help but feel that it was a horrible waste of resources.
As expected we had the usual bath toilet and sink, with a shelf for the storage of toiletries, and the obligatory bath creme and shampoo as well as a couple of shower caps which Little Miss liked!
There was a large radiator and plenty of towels and when I got into the bath I realised that the bath was VERY long- no lying down for me unless I filled up the bath to such a level that I could float! No matter, plenty of hot water, bubbles and a nice clean towel makes bath time great for me.
The toilet was a law unto itslef and after flushing it, we had to ensure that no one needed the toilet at any time soon after. It took forever for the tank to fill so that it could be reflushed, so it's one of those places where all guests need to know each other well.
AND SO TO BREAKFAST...
With hiomself being a vegetarian, we opted for the Continental breakfast option which was advertised as being £4.95. Ours was included in the price for a night at the hotel but I think the price is good value anyway.
The dining area has several tables but is still small enough to be cosy. The tables are set ready for breakfast with jams, butter, milk and sugar already on the table. Tea and coffee is collected from the central serving point, with there being several types of teas to chose from, although the staff are more than willing to bring the tea and coffee to the table woithout having to ask them to do so.
Guests have the choice of cereal, fresh juices, toast, cakes, muffins and different cheeses, so there is plenty to fill up on. I did find this the better option as although ther eis an English breakfast selection, I knew none of us would really eat it, and this Continental selection was more "our style!

The hotel is ideally situated for anyone needing to be in the East of the city- we needed to be close to Mile End Road, so this wasn't too far away. I also wanted somewhere we could take our son out for a meal or two, and again, this was easier than going into the West End.
So, the location is good, easy to find with planty of shops bars and restaurants, as well as a tube station and good bus service from the station to the High Street.
The hotel itself is comfortable and clean with helpful staff and good parking right outside the room.
It's not the prettiest hotel and I didn't like the walk from the reception area to our part of the hotel when I had to pass the recycling bins but I suppose the bins have to be kept somewhere.
It's certainly not a bad hotel if you need to be in the area. We paid about £100 for two nighs so that's tremendous value for three people bed and breakfast. I think we will almost certainly stay again. Not the very best but good enough for what we wanted.
Thanks for reading
