We attended a wedding in Cheltenham a couple of weeks ago, and stayed in the Big Sleep Hotel. I chose the hotel due to its central location, and it was fairly reasonably priced - £69 B&B for a standard double room. The booking process itself was very simple, and the full amount for the room is taken from your card at the time of booking. I called to ask about the car park and was told that this was £5 but on a first come first serve basis.
The chain has 3 hotels - in Cardiff, Cheltenham and Eastbourne. The Cheltenham hotel has 60 rooms. Rooms are available from £35 per night. Each has tea and coffee making facilities, WiFi access (which is chargeable) and a safe. The Cheltenham venue also has 3 function rooms for meetings.
When we were almost there, we called to ask see if there were spaces available and were told that was fine. The hotel was easy to find. The car park is in a secure underground car park which you have to 'buzz' through to reception to get access. We arrived around 11, and there were no rooms available as check in isn't until 3pm, so we got changed in the toilets, left our bags with reception and went to the wedding.
I arrived back at the hotel at about 10.30pm and was able to check ion straight away (reception is open 24 hours). They asked for my credit card details in case we charged anything to the room, and I was given a room card.
The room was easy to find. I was impressed with how clean it all looked. It was also a nice size with plenty of room on all sides of the bed to move around. The bed was comfortable but very low to the ground which would not suit some people who may struggle to get up from it. There was sufficient wardrobe and storage space, good size mirrors and a desk in the room. The bathroom had a bath with a shower in it. There was also a flat screen TV on the wall. My only niggle was that I wanted the overhead light on above the bed, but this wouldn't work unless the light in the corridor to the door and the bathroom was on, so it was a bit bright when lying in bed. The curtains were great - they were like fluffy carpet!
I slept with the window open as it was a warm night and it was quite noisy but living in a main road in London I am quite used to that. I think this is to be expected from city centre hotels.
The next morning, the shower was hot and powerful. The bathroom wall is very thin, so all sounds from the bathroom could be heard in the bedroom!
Breakfast was served until 10:30. I went to the restaurant at about 8:30. The breakfast was all self service. The selection of tea and coffee was good, as was the selection of cereals. There was fresh fruit (most of which looked a little past it) yoghurts, a selection of pastries and croissants and brown and white bread for toasting. On each table were packets of butter, marmalade and jam. The hotel doesn't offer a Full English breakfast, just says 'hot selection'. It was a big disappointment. The bacon was fatty and very greasy, the sausages were overcooked and dry, and the only eggs were hard boiled.
Check out time was 10:30am which is quite early. Upon check out all I had to pay for was the car park, and was charged £9 instead of the £5 I was expecting. I was told that this was because I had parked the car at 11am, I had to pay £1 an hour to cover me until the 3pm check in. I was quite annoyed not to have been told this when we called to ask. There are signs in the car park, but when we were laden down with suit carriers and overnight bags, we weren't paying any attention and would have appreciated being told prior to arriving that this was the case.
Overall, it was a nice basic hotel great for a one night stay, but I wouldn't recommend to anyone who likes a full English breakfast in the morning! Four stars from me.
