      Very helpful

Well worth a try if you are looking at staying in Bowness

My wife and I have stayed at The Craig Manor Hotel a total of eight times in the last 3 years each time for two nights (Friday and Saturday), we have stayed bed and breakfast seven times and we took dinner, bed and breakfast once. The only reason for taking dinner just the once is that there are that many good resturaunts within easy walking distance that we would rather not be kept in - house. We have also stayed in a range of different rooms. It is in a good spot and has plenty of parking.

      Standard Room

These are exactly as they say 'standard' we have stayed in two different standard rooms and they are quite basic really and the two we have stayed in were in need of modernisation, especially in the bathrooms, although they do seem to be working through the rooms as some others we have stayed in were newly decorated and with new bathroom suites, so maybe they have been done now as we havn't stayed in standard room for a while. I must say though the beds were very comfortable and these rooms are very resonably priced in comparison to similar hotels you might stay in in Bowness, and you still get the rest of the hotel facilities.

      Four Poster Room

These are much better than the standard rooms and as the name suggests come with a four poster and I think they all come with a lake view, however it has to be said that the hotel is not as close to the lake as some and you do have to look hard to see it but it is there. They seem to be quite a bit bigger than the standard rooms and the two we have stayed in were quite newly decorated. From memory though these rooms are about £30 a night dearer than the standard ones, but worth the extra money if you like a nice room.

      The Suite

I think there is only the one suite as we have requested one 4 times now and always got the same one. This is a lovely room you enter, from what is almost your own personal entrance to the hotel from the car park at the rear, into a lounge area about 12' x 12' furnished with a settee table and television etc., with a lake facing window, and from this room you access the bathroom and bedroom.

The bedroom is very large about 20' x 12' with a nice big king size bed, plenty of wardrobe, drawer and cupboard space and a television. It also has a lake facing window.
The bathroom is a decent size about 10'x 10' very modern sink, wc and two person spa bath which is perfect for relaxing in after a day walking, there is also a shower above if you can't be bothered with the bath.

      The Bar Area

This is situated at the front of the hotel, it is quite traditional in its decor and furnishing, as is most of the hotel, and has plenty of separate areas zoned out so you can sit and feel like you are in your own little space. It is quite a spacious bar area. The bar itself is just a straight bar about 15' long and is very well stocked.

There are also a couple of lounges off this area one of which goes into a sort of 'big bay window' which has very comfortable seating in it and lake views. This is a very nice room to enjoy an early evening drink before going out to dinner, a night cap on returning at night, or indeed a morning coffee with the paper.

      The Resturaunt

As I said earlier we have only had the evening meal at The Craig Manor once, it was an extremely good meal and I would not write off the idea of eating here again its just that there are so many resturaunts nearby to choose from. They normally give you a voucher for a free bottle of wine on check in if you dine with them so that is a nice little extra. There is good wine list with a good selection of red, white and sparkling wines and the food offered a good choice and was very well cooked.
The resturant itself is next door to the lounge I described earlier and so has the same lake views, its a large, spacious room and is very bright and airy. This is where you eat breakfast also and is a lovely room early in the morning. Breakfast is very good and comprises of cereal, fruit, fruit juice, tea, coffee, toast and then a full english if you can manage it this is all done by means of self service and you can have as much, or as little, as you like.

      The Pool and Spa

This is not on site but is not very far away, we normally take the car after breakfast if we are going and its at the burnside just the other side of Bowness, so about a 3 minute drive away.

It comprises a good size indoor pool, a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, it never seems to get too busy and to be honest the most people we have ever shared it with is about 8 which is good, and quite often we have had it to ourselves. There is also a massage centre there which my wife has used in the past offering different types of massage, you have to pay extra for this though. Upstairs is a decent size bar with two full size snooker tables and I think there is a gym although I have never used it.

      The Staff

The Craig Manor Hotel is family run on the buisness side of things but the bar and resturaunt seem to be worked by mostly foreigners as are many places in the Lake Disrict nowadays. The staff are very pleasant and helful and are very polite towards you. They have obviously been very well trained to make your stay very enjoyable.

Located at the top of the hill in Bowness on Windermere it is in a very good spot for getting in to town. The shops, bars and resturaunts of Bowness are on your doorstep. It is also not that far into Windermere the other way. As you walk down the hill past the many shops etc. you come to the lake at the bottom and the boats go from here for the many daily boat trips on Windermere. From the hotel to the lake is only a 10 minute walk maximum and is downhill, coming back up at the end of the day is a different matter!! but very good for you I'm sure!!

All in all taking everything in to account this is a fantastic hotel, we have really enjoyed every one of our stays there and will be visiting them again this year and many years to come. Yes some of the rooms need a bit of modernising, and yes you have to look hard for your lake view, but overall considering the quality of the food, staff and things like the bar lounge and the price (its very reasonably priced in my opinion compared to other hotels nearby) it is possibly one of the best hotels in Bowness. We have stayed in quite a few, some dearer than the Craig Manor and some cheaper and always we have come back to them as all round they are better.

The manor is spectacularly located overlooking Lake Windermere, Langdale Pikes and surrounding mountains in the English Lake District. And a wink away from the village of Bowness.
