The escape is an 18-30's surf lodge. The booking day's run from Friday - Friday or weekends. You can't book in until 3pm, this is because they only have the one cleaner and the bar staff to clean all the rooms. When you can check in (At the bar) you have to pay the remaining balance, plus an extra £20 per person as a deposit which you don't know about until you get there as they don't mention this on the website or the conformation e-mail. When we stayed there we paid £160 each (3 of us) for the room which didn't include breakfast. The deposit we paid at the time of booking was £40 each and we were told to pay the remaining £120 upon arrival plus that extra £20 as security deposit which you receive back after check out and they have inspected the room. We stayed at the beginning of august so prices may be different in the non peak season.
Obviously I didn't see every room so I can only comment on the one I stayed in. There were three of us staying in a room for four people, the room was small and was tight for the three of us never mind if there were to be a fourth person. The beds were in bunk style in a head to head position. We were lucky enough to get a shower in our room, but this did make the room smaller than it already was. Not all the rooms had a shower and I don't think any of the rooms had a toilet, the lodge had communal showers for those who didn't have one, and communal toilets for everyone. When I say communal toilets I only saw one and wasn't told of any others. The escape surf lodge claims it has had a refurb and it probably has but most of the budget was definitely spent on the bar and restaurant.
The bar stayed open until 4am, I'm not sure what time the bar opened as we had already left for the beach or the other bars in town. On most day's we left at around twelve and the bar still wasn't open. The look was fantastic, with a modern style, a funky pool table (50pence a game) and a smart sound system (Bose 802 series 3 loud speakers). Most of the time the bar was empty getting busy when people were on there way out or just coming home from there night on the town. Some of the staff were very friendly and would talk to you about your stay and the activities you could do around the area, but a small few were just miserable and seemed like they didn't want to be there. They had the usual range of beverages from draught to bottles to spirits, the prices were average probably just what you would pay at home.
The bird (restaurant).
The bird was a Thai restaurant which was amazing, both the look and the food. The chef had come from a cooking school (Time for lime) in Thailand. The food was definitely good value for money, large portions and very tasty. The bird would get quite busy later on in the evening as it was open to the public and not just guests.
The location of the lodge was quite good. Only a ten minute walk from the town center. It was about a twenty minute walk from Towan beach and great western. It was about a thirty to forty five minute walk to Fistral. The lodge did have parking but not many spaces and did fill up quickly. When we stayed we were lucky enough to get a space and then didn't move it for the week we were there. Which we didn't really need to as everything we needed was quite close buy.
Overall The escape surf lodge was not that bad. It's good for just somewhere to sleep and get changed for your night out. Although I did think the price was expensive for the size. The best part of the surf lodge was the trendy bar and the fantastic restaurant.
