Malthouse Ironbridge (Shropshire)
Advantages: Cracking location, good food, B&B rooms, car park, great staff
Disadvantages: No phone signal, gets VERY busy in summer, need to book at weekends in the restaurant
This pub and restaurant in Ironbridge is literally across the road from the River Severn and a two minute walk down the hill from the bridge itself. Very popular with foodies and locals alike, it serves great food off two different menus, has a small stage area in the bar for live music and also has bed and breakfast accommodation attached.
You cannot miss this pub from the outside as it is very large and is painted bright yellow. The building is an L shape with the shorter side being the bar area and the bigger side is given over to the restaurant.
We have frequently used the bar side, which markets itself as a 'Jazz Bar' although I have never seen any jazz in there. Plenty of local bands do play quite frequently though and the atmosphere is pretty young and lively.
There is a large blackboard to one side behind the bar which shows the days specials and bar menu. Food here is generally very good and its a pub we use all the time for work nights out because its pretty good value too, pub grub type dishes (bangers and mash, burger and chips) are around the £8 mark and are always plentiful and tasty.
The restaurant menu caters for more discerning tastes and has lovely dishes such as moules mariniere for £12 and steaks of varying cuts and weights up to £20. Starters range from around £5 to £8 for old classics such as pate on toast, a selection of tapas and homemade soup of the day. The puddings are all around £5-6 and are delicious, I have tried their creme brulees a number of times and have always been impressed.
Service is pretty good and always very friendly, its a nice, welcoming atmosphere and this probably explains it's popularity. On mothers day or any other occasion you will generally need to book a table in the restaurant well in advance to get in. In the summer especially the bar can be absolutely rammed and punters spill out into the small beer garden area to the front.
There is a car park, which, for its central location, is pretty big, but as Ironbridge is one of those places which people generally have to drive to it's often difficult to get a space. There are plenty of parking alternatives within 10 minutes walk of this pub however, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
The bed and breakfast I have never tried personally, but a friend of the family stopped there for a nearby wedding and was very impressed. The website features a number of pictures of the very contemporary styled rooms and as they start from a very reasonable £70 per night including breakfast, I would highly recommend them as very good value for money, given the location.
They have recently rennovated an annex cottage to provide further accommodation and the top floor has been turned into a penthouse with cracking views of the river by the looks of it.
One minor problem here is that phone signal is practically non-existent and usually means lots of waving the phone around and trying to locate the small pockets of reception. This is not just at the Malthouse though, it is true for virtually the whole of Ironbridge, which sits in a deep valley. It can be very annoying if you are trying to meet up with people though!
All in all this is a fantastic pub, serving great food and reasonably priced drinks in an excellent, river front location. Of all the (many) pubs in Ironbridge this one is our favourite, whether we are out for a sociable evening or having a quiet lunch. It is easy to see why it is so popular.
If you happen to be visiting Ironbridge then do call in on this place if you get the chance!
Summary: A cracking pub in Ironbridge where you can get a tasty meal and a riverside view.
