The Mill Inn (Thurnham)
Advantages: Beautiful location, clean and comfy rooms
Disadvantages: Soundproofing in rooms not good. Vegan meal was uninspiring
I stayed at The Mill (in one of their 15 rooms) for a free night just before Easter this week and thought it worthwhile to give an insight into the experience.
I got the freebie from 'More Than' Insurance. I was planning to move to a different insurer and they used this free night to tempt me to stay. I was given a booklet of places that I could stay in England and Wales. As I was planning to drive to the Lakes, I thought that it would be great to split the journey. I chose The Mill after I researched some of the hotels in the booklet on Tripadvisor; it was reviewed very favourably.
The Mill is located near to Glasson Dock which is a beauty spot near Lancaster often frequented by Lancaster locals. Glasson Dock is a funny, old-fashioned little place (quaint) which makes you feel thet you have stepped back in time - sometimes to the seventies and sometimes to Victorian times. It has the worst-looking cafe I have ever seen but I couldn't go in as it was closed (aged formica tables, dusty, faded silk flowers and an old calor gas heater). It is a lovely place to visit kitsch, unspoiled and interesting. The Mill is alongside a canal that runs to the dock.
The Mill was easy to find in the car (armed with AA Routefinder instructions) and with good signage.
On the approach, The Mill looks quite an imposing building with a decent sized carpark and an outside area and children's play area. It is slightly confusing which entrance to use to go and book in as there are entrances up some stairs, on a level and around at the side. The check-in was up the stairs.
This was nice and simple. I gave them my name and they gave me a key. They asked if I wanted to upgrade to a room with a canal view (I think this was an extra £10). I didn't. The cost of the rooms if you have to pay is around £50-£60.
This was a double with an en-suite and a TV on the wall. It was adequately sized and furnished and upholstered in a dark wood/deep coloured scheme. It was clean and had a well stocked tray with teas and coffees and a kettle. The bathroom looked neutral and well kept (with plenty of towels and free mini toiletries). The bed was clean and very comfortable. There was a good (non canal) view of a farm and some fields.
The problem with this room was that it was not soundproof and I could hear everything going on in the corridor outside and I could very clearly hear footsteps and heavy creaking from the people in the floor above. This must be commented on as it was so evident.
This is spacious and well laid out with a very warm and welcoming feel. Staff were friendly and helpful and the selection of beers were very good (some were not available though). There were lots of games available for customers to play - such as a giant 'Connect 4'.
My partner and I had dinner in the restaurant. I saw they has vegetarian options so I enquired whether any of them could be made vegan. I was told that it was possible with one dish if a sauce was left off. Unfortunately, as much as I appreciate an eating place giving this option, I did not like the dish that was given me; it was boring and did not represent good value for money in its vegan state. My partner had a vegetarian meal which looked good and was more acceptable. Our meal cost around £16 - which would have been fine if I had enjoyed it.
The Best Thing About The Mill
Its location. The canal which The Mill is right next to is very beautiful with lots of wildlife in the fields next to it and on the canal bank. There were many pristine swans - some with nests. From The Mill you can walk to Glasson Dock along the tow path and it is a lovely walk (just less than a mile).
I had a great time when I stayed here. Given that the rooms are clean and comfortable and the pub is welcoming - and also that The Mill is situated in such a fantastic place, I would recommend it as a place to stay. Do yourself a favour and take some earplugs though.
Summary: A great place for a short stay.
