Advantages: Quality accommodation

Disadvantages: None

I recently spent the weekend in St Andrews, and having trawled the web for somewhere to stay; trying to find somewhere affordable and without needing to remortgage the house, just to pay for the weekend, I eventually came across the Old Station Bed and Breakfast in Strathivie.

I did not want to pay the earth for a room, but at the same time, I wanted somewhere that was comfortable and bordering on luxurious. It is for this reason that i picked this 4 star B and B, in prefernce to a lower graded hotel in the centre of town.

Strathivie, is just two miles out of st Andrews, and it is therefore very accessible. Driving into town takes about five minutes, alternatively a cab was about £5.

Our room cost £66 per night (not per person). The B and B won an award for the best B and B in Scotland last year. It has only been open a couple of years.

As the name suggests, the building is on the site of the old railway station, the conservatory dining room, was once the station platform. A signal, and a carriage are to be found in the grounds.

The place is very welcoming, we were greeted with coffee, and the lounges were very inviting. There are five rooms in total. The establishment is not licenced, but we were able to bring our own wine and enjoy it in the library or lounge.

The library was wonderful to sit in and enjoy the scenery, or alterniatvely browse through the massive selection of old books, particularly railway and golf books.

The rooms were beautifully decorated, the bathrooms were extremely luxurious, with a great shower, and there was plenty of reading material such as golf magazines to enjoy.

All in all, a great weekend, and having wandered through the town and looked at some of the other hotels, which were charging almost double, and nowhere near as nice, we are glad we made the choice we did.

Breakfast consisted of a full breakfast, together with cereals and juices, akin to
what one would expect in the UK

The b and b takes all major credit cards.

Sounds very nice, but does seem a bit dear for a B&B.
