The Ross hotel is a boutique 4* hotel in the heart of Killarney town centre. I was here on a work trip at the very end of April and this was one of my favourite hotels of the trip. The majority of hotels in this area are quite traditional in décor but, the Ross is completely the opposite! It is very funky and as soon as you enter the lobby you can't help being impressed by the bright green, pink and black décor. I had been looking forward to seeing the hotel as soon as I found out we would be visiting and I have to say I wasn't disappointed.
I suppose to be fair the exterior is nothing spectacular - in all honesty it doesn't stand out on the street that you would really notice it unless you were looking for it. And since the lady who was taking around the hotel was brining us across from the hotel across the road we didn't even realise we had reached it until she started walking in! However as soon as you then enter the small but, funky lobby is very eye catching. The reception desk is pretty small as this is a small hotel and space is compact but, there is room for a small bar just next to reception where guests can grab a coffee. There are a few seats dotted around overall it is a lovely place to walk in to.
The hotel has 29 rooms most of which are Deluxe although they do have a few suites. We didn't unfortunately see a suite as much as I would have liked to but, the standard deluxe room is pretty nice! They either have a big king sized bed or two doubles so that for me was a plus as if you were staying as a set of friends instead of a couple the beds are a decent size rather than a small single. The room was my ideal colour scheme with teal and chocolate colours and the furniture was all dark wood. It was very cosy yet modern and also quite spacious. The room had a desk with flat screen TV and also robes and slippers provided which I always love as it is something nice to relax in after a shower but, not something I would want to pack in my case! The bathrooms are really nice to with a marble decor and a good sized shower. Toiletries are provided as you would expect of a 4* hotel as is a kettle!
I believe that the suites all have an open fire which they will put on for you during the day for your return along with a turndown service.
The restaurant and bar:
The hotel have an amazing lounge area named the 'Pink lounge' - hence the name is all pink and black with retro lighting and candles and is a great place for chilling out before a meal in the hotel restaurant. I truly loved the whole room and would have happily stayed there all day chilling out if I could! The bar is next to the lounge and again is very modern with the green and pink décor. The bar can be hired for private functions as it has its own dance floor and is popular for hen nights apparently. I am not sure how much it would cost to rent but, I am sure it would certainly be ideal especially for those like me who love all things pink and girly.
The restaurant is apparently very sought after by locals and tourists due to its menu and the general feel of the place and follows the same funky modern colour scheme of pinks, greens and dark wood and is named 'Cellar One' because of its basement location. The menu is quite good with lots of choice and is ideal for a special occasion as it is quite intimate. Booking in advance is recommended and you can expect to pay around 60 Euros per head for a 3 course meal with one drink. Yes it is expensive and I didn't unfortunately get to sample the food but, it certainly looked impressive. A meal here would definitely be somewhere you would look at for a special occasion.
The hotel has a small rooftop garden which has an outdoor hot tub which is free for guests to use and a huge bonus of the hotel is that guests can use all of the spa and gym facilities of the Killarney Park hotel across the road which is the sister property. The spa has a good range of treatments available and you can book through the concierge at either of the hotels. Again be prepared to pay a lot out for the treatments as they are not cheap but, you pay for what you get as treatments seem to be done using the best lotions and potions! For any guests that are driving, you can park in the car park of the Killarney Park completely free of charge.
The hotel is really ideal for those who want to be in the heart of the town centre with plenty of places right on the doorstep to explore including the Ring of Kerry, Gap of Dunloe, Muckross house and of course the stunning Irish coastline. Immediately outside of the hotel there are plenty of places to shop, eat and drink including a small outlet mall. The hotel is set on the main rod so as soon as you walk out you are in the hub of everything. There is a cracking little cafe just a few doors down and a brilliant fruit and veg market just around the corner. The hotel is generally in a great location and certainly a huge bonus.
Rooms start at around 150 euros per room per night but, sometimes the hotel will run a deal where you can get two nights booked together at a reduced rate and they will include breakfast and sometimes also one evening meal too. This works out very well when you take into consideration the normal cost of a meal at the hotel! The hotel is closed during January, February and March unfortunately.
I have a high opinion of this place because it is everything I look for in a hotel. I love the modern decor and the rooms that although modern, are also very cosy and I also love the fact that it is a boutique property - if you didn't know where it was you could easily just walk right past it on the street unaware of what a little gem of a place is inside! I in fact liked the hotel that much that I am looking to go back with my husband next Spring and am already getting quite excited by the thought of returning!
