Advantages: cheap (ish)
Disadvantages: dirty, noisy, undesirable clientele, unpleasant breakfast
I stayed in this hotel in March 2008 whilist on a trip with two friends, and we paid £20 a night each for a triple room for three nights.
I have thought about this hard, and I am pretty sure that this has to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Granted, it was very cheap and you get what you pay for. I just wish we went just a little bit more upmarket.
The hotel itself shares a layby with a sign making company in Dunston, which is just near Gateshead. It is easy to catch the bus into Newcastle as there is a stop just outside the hotel.
The outside, is a shabby mock-tudor affair which looks run down with plastic signs advertising cheap rates and a sky sports bar.
When I walked into the hotel room, my first thought was that my mother would simply not stay here. There was a sixties style blue carpet with swirls which was well worn, and the walls were a mustard yellow, however there were patches on the wall where fixtures had been removed and they hadn't bothered to paint over it. There was a wardrobe and chest of drawers (ANEBODA range from IKEA) and the headboard was badly stained. The room also smelt badly of cigarette smoke and there was an ashtray supplied, even though smoking in public places was illegal by then. The view from the window was a mobile phone mast which stood about ten metres away.
The room was en-suite, and the bathroom compartment had been nailed into the corner of the room. Unfortunatly, the wall didn't quite reach the ceiling at one part meaning there was a hole about 30cm x 30cm which is hardly pleasant when there are three of you in the room. There was also a carpet in the bathroom which was peach in colour and well used. The bath was new, however the toilet looked pretty old and the seat didn't fit properly.
Worst of all, the walls were paper thin. On the Saturday evening we were woken by the sound of a rowdy stag party charging through the corridor and on the Sunday night I was kept awake by the sound of a woman 'moaning' in a state of pleasure. It was so clear, I couldn't ignore it and I just lay there hoping it would eventually end, which in time it did. I wondered what kind of woman would enjoy sex in such a repulsive hotel? Then it occurred to me that it would one who was getting paid, which was probably the case.
Included in the price at the 'Royal Hotel' is a full English Breakfast. The restaurant part is pleasant enough although smells quite strongly of detergant. When we sat down, a rather tired looking, large lady wandered over with our breakfasts which looked like they were produced with the cheapest ingredients possible. There is nothing worse in my mind, than cheap sausages and the whole thing tasted pretty poor. I only had toast after that. Most of the other guests were slumped over their tables and clearly hungover or still drunk.
My friend also had a horrible experience in the downstairs toilets which were for the use of guests and customers at the bar. A man in his 50s / 60s came in while he was at the urinals and after having heard what he did, we decided he was clearly there cruising, but being very unsubtle about it. The hotel is in a layby, but I am not sure if this is common, or expected but this is something I don't really want to research!
The bar area however is actually quite nice. There is a couple of flatscreen tvs showing showing sport or gameshows, two pool tables, indoor and outdoor seating and a jukebox.
But we were on the pooltable on Sunday night, when two guys came in. They looked pretty rough, and it was basically indicated to us that we should get lost after our game or we'd get a kicking. We finished and went back to our room.
When we left on Monday, I just felt so cheap and dirty. This was a horrid hotel that I never want to see again.
Summary: Avoid at all costs
