Advantages: Great View, Peaceful and Friendly Atmoshphere
Disadvantages: didnt want to leave
I have only been on one cottage holiday before and it was a disaster, the place looked nothing like the blurb, the owners were unfriendly and unhelpful etc. So I was a bit wary about booking another one. However with a largish family desperate for a holiday and not wanting to brave it camping at the end of October we decided to give it another bash. We were very glad we did.
We booked a cottage in Cornwall through Recommended Cottages. We wanted some peace and quiet, somewhere where the kids could have room to run around without worrying about being run over.
We chose a cottage called Tor View in a little hamlet called Trebell Green near Bodmin. The picture in the brochure showed a wonderful view over a couple of fields to a small tor, although with my previous experience, I assumed that this was the view from a mile down the road. I was very pleasantly surprised when we eventually emerged from some very narrow roads to find the cottage with the view as shown in the brochure.
The owners Mr and Mrs Watson heard us drive up and came out to greet us, they were very friendly and took us on a tour of the cottage. The first thing that struck me about the place was the size, the place sleeps up to 8 people, but I was expecting it to be cramped, the next thing that I thought was how homely it was, there were plates, pictures and small brasses on the walls that gave it that lived in look rather that a sterile hotel room. Mrs Watson had also baked us a cake and some home made scones for our tea. As well as leaving the essential tea, coffee, sugar and milk in the fridge she had also left us some clotted cream and jam.
Downstairs there was a porch with a washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge freezer, ironing board, iron etc, we also found a massive box of outdoor toys footballs etc that they said we were welcome to use. The Kitchen was massive and was equipped with a Very large fridge with a small freezer, a dishwasher, cooker, m
icrowave. A dinning room to sit 8 comfortably with a rayburn that you can use for cooking and it also provides the central heating. Another porch to the back where you can store your shoes etc, there is a pay phone in the hall that you can receive incoming calls on if you want, a downstairs toilet with a bath / shower. Then the massive front room, this room was very long and very homely with 2 large sofas and 3 chairs there was room for everybody to sit comfortably. There was a large bookshelf with books and games for the grown ups and the kids. There was a TV, Video and Stereo to keep us amused and a log burning fire to keep us warm in the evenings. Again Mr and Mrs Watson were very helpful, they had laid up the fire ready to go and told us how to do it, but they said if we wanted them to do it for us or needed any help then just to give them a shout. They also told us to help ourselves to the logs and kindling from their woodshed, there was no additional charge.
Then they took us upstairs there was another toilet with small bath/shower, a master bedroom that was quite large and had a double bed and lots of storage space in cupboards etc. There was a second bedroom containing to large single beds again loads of storage space. The third bedroom contained a single bed and a captain bunk (Bed with storage and table underneath) this room was decorated with children in mind and the last bedroom had another double bed. All bed linen and towels were included so there was no need to take any or to pay any hire charges.
The cottage is situated in a very quiet area no busy roads or background noise at night the sky is clear and you can see millions of stars. There are a few fields one with a fishing lake and you have free reign to explore these to your hearts content. There were sheep in one of the fields and the kids loved being able to get close to the animals, they also enjoyed playing it down by the lake it was perfect for them to be able to
let of steam. Mr and Mrs Watson told us that next year they are planning to put in a children’s playground so there would be even more for the kids to do.
There was a massive box of brochures and leaflets of all the tourist attractions as well as maps to show you how to get there. Obviously there was an information pack as well telling you where the nearest facilities where, again we were told if we needed any more info or wanted ideas of what to do then just shout.
All in all we had a great time, there were a few days of bad weather but we didn’t care snuggled up in our nice cottage with the log fire going sitting on the carpet playing games with the kids. We booked this cottage through Recommended Cottages but as we were leaving we were given an information pack by the owners and told if we wanted to book up again then just to ring them up and book direct, I compared the prices and will definitely take them up on it because it would have saved me over £200.
Their prices are as follows
July/August £750 per week
June/September £550 per week
May/October £350 per week
April/November £280 per week
All half terms, bank holidays, Easter etc that fall outside high season are charged at £550
I think we will definitely go back there again, we had a fantastic time even going out of season when a lot of the attractions were closed, it was a wonderfully relaxing break, just what I needed.
p.s. We don’t have a dog, but they said if we had a well behaved dog we could take it along.
