Advantages: Parking, DLR access, clean, tidy hotel

Disadvantages: Further out from city centre

Last June (2008) my husband and I were off to London for the weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary but we were trying to do it on a budget. I immediately went and checked the Travelodge website for deals as I have always found their hotels to be of a good standard and you know exactly what you will get because of their uniform nature of rooms and facilities.

As I was booking a few weeks in advance I was able to get this room for £45 which, on a saturday night in London, is very reasonable indeed. I used to live in London so the fact that this particular hotel is in the 'business' district of Docklands and not in the more touristy West End did not bother me at all, the DLR goes almost straight past the hotel and I knew that parking would be considerably easier on this side of town.

The hotel itself is fairly easy to navigate to, we used a sat nav but didnt really need to. There is a large car park right outside the hotel (one of the benefits of its location near to convention centres), you have to pay to use it but for residents of the hotel it is a flat fee of £5 per night which you pay on check in.

The DLR station is literally a two minute walk from the hotel, you can actually see the line from the hotel, the station (East India) was always quiet when we used it (we assumed because it was the weekend and the DLR is primarily used by commuters on weekdays). This means its pretty easy to get in and out of town although it will take about 25 mins and you will probably change at Bank.

The rooms are standard travelodge but thats great if you just want a place to sleep, the hotel has a bar / cafe which serves a good breakfast and when we returned to the hotel at around midnight they were still serving alcohol so presumably have a fairly late licence.

If you are looking for a bed for the night in London, dont be put off by the less central location of this Travelodge, for your money you get very good value and its easier than you think to get into town, add to this the convenience of the parking facilities and its a great place all round.

Summary: Great value and a good location to boot
