Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: parking fees
We had the pleasure of staying last Saturday night at the Travelodge Heathrow. We weren’t on our way to sunnier climes but to a 50th birthday party being held at the BA club. Due to the likelihood of us consuming a quantity of alcohol we looked for a budget hotel near the airport and wound up staying at the Travelodge. ~~~~ The Price ~~~~ The regular room rate is £49.50 but we got a deal through the Mail on Sunday putting our accommodation price down to £35 for room only the charges are per room rather than per person. Deals like this are commonplace and worth looking out for. I was somewhat surprised to be charged £5 for one nights parking at this hotel, I thought that was a little extreme. Many people use hotels near airports as somewhere to park whilst they are away but to do so here would cost more than the long term car park as the rate is £5 per night. ~~~~ The Room ~~~~ I was pleasantly surprised by the standards of the rooms, as were my parents and cousins who we went to the party with. There was a large wardrobe, a dressing table, easy chair and table, spacious bathroom (both bath and shower) and a double bed. The standard trouser press and hairdryer were also present along with a kettle and tea and coffee (but no biscuits!). I have paid more to stay in hotels and found less comfortable accommodation. The television showed all five terrestrial channels plus a sports channel, movie channel, cartoon channel and some radio stations. The television in my parents room didn’t work properly and they only got 3 terrestrial channels and radio 1, fortunately the stay was too short to warrant a complaint. ~~~~ The Freebies ~~~~ Now I travel regularly on business and keep a whole basketful of hotel freebies in my bathroom for guests to use. This hotel was a bit short on the freebie side, in our bathroom there was one small bar of soap and one small bottle of gentle body and hair wash. My parents found none
of this in their room. Included in the price of your stay are free morning papers which we duly ordered but didn’t arrive. When we checked out we asked about the papers and were told they hadn’t been delivered to the hotel. ~~~~ The Bar & Restaurant ~~~~ Well we didn’t actually eat in the hotel as we were off to a party. Breakfast was very steeply priced at £8 for full English and £5 for continental. Although this is a pretty standard hotel price it seemed a little out of keeping for a budget hotel. Fortunately we were invited to a relatives house for breakfast. We did sample the bar though, my Dad was late getting ready! The prices were not too steep with a bottle of Heineken at £2-50, but there were no draught beers. ~~~~ The Location ~~~~ This hotel is situated very close to Heathrow Airport (although we were not bothered by noise) and as such is convenient if you are taking a flight. There are directions on their web-site but all three couples using these got very lost. Finding the hotel added an extra half hour to our journey. If you are heading here make sure you have your London A to Z in the car, we would never have got there without ours. ~~~~ The Bottom Line ~~~~ As a budget hotel this will certainly meet your needs. The rooms are of an excellent standard for the price but the parking charges are very steep. I would stay there again if I needed to.

- 06/09/02 Good review - and a bargain if you're there just for a one night stay. I'm always shocked how much they charge for parking inclsuive packages - you could stay at one of the 4 star hotels on Bath Rd for the equivalent!
You& #39;ll be sorry to hear that you don't even get soap at Odges nowadays (not at Edinburgh anyway) |

- 19/02/01 A little bit of nostalgia for me! That Travelodge is just a couple of miles from Hayes, the particurly skaggy bit of London that I call home! |
