Advantages: Many on motorways, clean and comfy
Disadvantages: Some can be noisy with people coming and going.
Travelodge is a chain of hotels throughout the country, mostly on motorway service stations, although several are just outside city centres or even in City centres.
I have stayed in about 8 different lodges around the country and always find a good high standard in them. Food available does vary depending on location, but what is available is always pointed out to you on booking. Many are part of the Moto service stations so offer a wide range of food, often little chefs and burger kings, sometimes a nice coffee shop. If you show your Travelodge key at the little chef you get 25% off your bill too! All of them offer breakfast in a box for £4.99 but I usually go to the service station instead. They all have vending machines for snacks too.
The room in each lodge is similar. A double bed with fresh crisp white sheets, a clean duvet cover, and nice plump pillows. There is a large sofa bed too, if you book a family room, at the same price as non family room. You get a small kettle, mugs and coffee/tea/sugar/milk. Fluffy white towels in a nice size shower/bathroom. You have a TV with non digital channels, but can hire films for extra payment. There is a large dressing table/desk, with a comfy bucket type chair. Recently they have stopped putting in hair dryers, but say they are available from reception. They have also stopped giving you free soap and shampoo, as they say they are trying to charge less so need to keep their costs down, and most people take their own anyhow. Seems fair enough to me at the price they charge. The London and airport Travelodge’s charge more than this.
The website is easy to use and you can search by date, area, or price (looking for cheaper offers). If you book online 1 month before travel, you can search for £15 rooms, which are limited but possible to get. Less than 1 month before you can get a room for £26. Both these offers must be booked online, fully paid for, and no refund can be given if you cancel. I have done this several times and find it worth the cancellation risk, at those prices. The price you pay is per room, so for £15 or £26 up to 3 people can stay in a room! You simply print out your confirmation and take that with you. If you book in at the lodge or the offers are all taken already it is £56 a room, still not that much for 3 people I feel. The website allows you to print out a map and directions, but also gives a postcode for Sat Navs, which I found spot on when I tried it last!
Check in is after 3pm, and check out before noon.
I have not really been able to fault Travelodge, especially at the price!
Summary: A good value, useful hotel, easy to book online.
