Travelodge in general
Advantages: Polite staff, gave us a fan
Disadvantages: Stained room, plug didn't fit bath or sink, had to make own beds
Please note my review is about the travelodge at the M42 services near Tamworth.
Recently we decided to take our 2 little girls for a few days away, we decided where to go by what was in the area that we were able to use our Tesco Reward vouchers on and so decided on Tamworth as it was near to Birmingham, Drayton Manor and Cadbury World.
I was one of the lucky ones that managed to book a room in the Travelodge sale in June and got three nights for £10 per night plus a £2 booking fee so in all a room for three nights cost us £32 which is less than a room usually costs for one night. It seems that a Sunday night must be their quietest night as you can get a room on a Sunday for £19 whereas a Saturday night would usually cost you £50.95.
The Travelodge that we stayed in was at the M42 services and when we arrived we found there was the Travelodge and then a service building to the front of it which housed a Marks and Spencers, a Costa Coffee, a Burger King, some toilets, a WH Smiths and an amusement arcade. We found that mid-afternoon it was easy to get parked next to the Travelodge and through our whole stay we were never more than one row back in the car park.
The Travelodge from outside looks like any other a simple building with two floors and numerous windows all displaying a net curtain. On entering there was a door to the left and right leading to rooms and some stairs and another door ahead of you, the entrance area was very clean and we booked in with ease, you must enter your registration number on a computer at reception to provide you with free parking during your stay.
We were given a room on the bottom floor on the side of the building where the car park was which we were happy with as it meant we were able to keep an eye on the car. The door of the room was quite hard to open and sometimes took a couple of turns back and forth to open. On entering the room I was surprised to find only the double bed was made up as we had booked a family room but after speaking to reception we were told that the bedding was behind the door and we were to make the other beds up ourselves.
The room is very basic, a wardrobe behind the door with a set of fixed hangers and a set of shelves, next to the wardrobe there is a low bench which is then attached to a high bench where there was a small kettle and provisions for making tea and coffee, I was quite surprised to find only 2 cups considering children are aged up to 16 on the website I would have expected a room for four to have four cups. Above the bench there was a mirror and below it a chair and then finally a TV was a remote however our remote did not have a back on the battery compartment which I wasn't happy with as our baby has a thing for remotes and I was worried if she got hold of it she would be eating batteries so we had to be extra careful.
Within the room there was a small bathroom which seemed at first to be in perfect order although there were only 2 sets of towels left for a room booked for 4 people but we had taken our own so this wasn't an issue. We had taken some milk with us and I filled the bath with some cold water to stand the milk in however returning to the bathroom a while later the water was no longer in the bath, I tried using the sink instead and the same happened although it lasted longer in the sink than the bath. My husband asked reception for another plug and was told that there could move us room but they couldn't give us another plug, as I had already made up the beds and unpacked there was no way I was moving and so just said I would use the shower for the children and stay in the same room.
The room itself was boiling and on trying to open the window we found the net curtain rail was coming down at one end and that one of the window latches wasn't fixed properly. The window itself was on a wire and would only open a couple of inches and so did nothing to cool the room down. My husband was talking to someone in reception about how hot it was and they did give us a fan to use which I hadn't even thought would have been available but it was a pretty poor fan and didn't do much to cool you down unless you sat in front of it.
The beds were comfortable although I found it annoying that the sheets barely fit the bed and that every day the chambermaids would come in and remake the bed tucking the quilt under the mattress and therefore when you would pull the quilt back the sheet would pull out and you would have to remake the bed anyway. The lights were all on a main switch near the bathroom door but there were also lamps on either side of the bed with individual switches which I found useful when I had to get up to feed the baby at 6 in the morning rather than having to put the main lights on and wake everybody.
The décor is very simple with a blue carpet and sofa (turns into a fourth bed) and cream walls, the carpet and the sofa both had stains on them and there was a small hole in the wall.
If I had paid full price for this I would have demanded my money back and gone elsewhere, as it was we put up with the room and eventually the receptionist did give us another plug which was a good job as the shower was far too powerful for children. I have sent an email of complaint about all of the above although I must say the staff were polite and the majority were helpful and the main part of the building was clean. The chambermaids cleaned the room around all of our stuff every day and restocked the tea and coffee aswell as giving us clean towels. I used to be a chambermaid in our local Travelodge and a room like this would never have been let out in the state it was, I never saw any of the other rooms but considering they saiod we could move rooms if we wanted then I would presume that other rooms are as bad or why would they have put us in it in the first place.
Summary: Won't be staying there again
